During a meeting of team owners and riders Sunday morning at Daytona, Grand American Road Racing President Roger Edmondson announced that the MOTO-ST program is just the start and that $750,000 is being invested this year to develop what will ultimately be a racing series with multiple classes. Edmondson said that MOTO-ST had the potential to be “the next big thing” in motorcycle racing and that its backers were committed to making the series successful. Also speaking at the meeting, Steve McLaughlin announced that Sunday’s event would be televised, with a one-hour show on SPEED; commentator Brian Drebber was on hand with a camera crew at the event. Former racer McLaughlin was instrumental in convincing the AMA to adopt the Superbike class in the mid-1970s, and won the first official AMA Superbike race at Daytona in 1976. He later founded the Superbike World Championship and has been involved in promoting various Superbike Series and Grand Prix events overseas. He currently works with Grand American on developing commercial support for the MOTO-ST Series.
