Yamaha rider Jason O’Halloran has taken the first overall category honours at the World Superbike Championship round at Phillip Island, by winning the Australian Supersport class on Sunday morning. O’Halloran set up the overall win with two race wins on Saturday, and followed it up with a fourth placing in the final race on Sunday morning. Yamaha swept the podium in the opening race with O’Halloran taking the honours from Jamie Stauffer and Jeremy Crowe. The second race saw Teknic Honda rider Bryan Starring pipped by just 0.018 seconds to claim second behind O’Halloran, with Stauffer finishing in third. In the third race, Yamaha’s Jeremy Crowe did well to earn a race win, ahead of Stauffer and Suzuki’s Josh Waters. The results meant that O’Halloran finished the meet with 67 points overall from Crowe on 60 points, and Stauffer in third with 58. Speaking immediately after the final race, O’Halloran was please that he got dual race-wins for the first time in one meet, and said that a good bike setup in Saturday’s excellent conditions was the key. “It’s been a really good weekend as we’ve come here with only our Australian form and haven’t had any practise, but the bike had a pretty good setup straight away,” he said. “Both races yesterday were excellent it is the first time for me to win two races in a weekend and to take the overall win is awesome. “This morning wasn’t too bad even though it was really wet, and I think that we have rode the bike only once in the rain. The setup this morning wasn’t so good but I just consolidated and made sure I got the win overall.” O’Halloran paid tribute to his racing team, and to the Phillip Island track which he loves to race on. “Yamaha has been working so well and the whole team has bonded together this year,” he said. “It has been a great weekend – Phillip Island is great, it’s a good track and I love it every time we come out here so to get this result was very satisfying.”
