Lee’s Cycle’s Jeremy Toye fought back against a hard-charging Jeff Tigert to take Sunday’s WSMC Toyota Cup Formula 1 win at Willow Springs. It was back-and-forth for the latter half of the 12-lap race between Toye and Mach 1 Motorsports-sponsored Tigert, and went down to the checkered flag with Toye edging out Tigert by 0.183-second. And in another close battle, No Limit Racing’s Jason Curtis ran down Rojo Racing’s Jason Perez and just edged him out at the finish line by 0.024-second to take third position. Based on his F1 win in January, Tigert started from pole position with Toye alongside. At the start of the race, Tigert essentially did a rolling burn-out on his Dunlop-shod CBR1000RR, getting a poor launch; several riders charging from behind Tigert on the grid bumped as they took evasive action. Tigert quickly recovered and set the fastest lap of the race at 1:21.056 while chasing Toye, who led from the start. When Tigert caught and passed Toye for the lead, though, Toye responded and put the power of his newly built GSX-R1000 engine to use. “When you’re riding by yourself, you kind of start staring at the clouds and the birds and stuff,” Toye explained about leading the first seven laps of the race on his own. “Then when you see one of your buddies go by, you’re like ‘let’s see if we can get sideways and throw some rubber in his face.'” Both Tigert and Toye said that they really enjoyed the hard-fought, close battle, calling it the kind of race they come out to Willow Springs for. “Oh man, that was awesome,” Tigert exclaimed from his spot on the podium. “I’ll take second to Jeremy any day when you got a battle like that.” Jason Curtis started from the last row of the grid and was in fifth at the end of the first lap. It wasn’t until the 11th lap of the race that he finally caught Perez, both on GSX-R1000s fitted with Dunlop tires. The two racers went through turn nine side-by-side on the last lap with Perez trying to make a move around the outside. Curtis held him off through the turn and led exiting the final corner. With the wind blowing into their faces on the front straight, Perez used the draft to sling-shot himself around Curtis, but was not able to complete the maneuver before crossing the finish line. “[At WSMC] you don’t just come out here and walk away. The competition is really, really good,” AMA Superbike regular Curtis said. The battle for fifth place was close as well. Robbie Dowie on his ZX-10R just kept GSX-R1000 mounted Jeff Stern at bay, crossing the finish line 0.089-second ahead to round out the top five. Michael Cotton (Duc) More, from a press release issued by No Limit Motor Sports: No Limit’s Jason Curtis had a good day on his return to competition following some serious right shoulder surgery performed by Dr. Ting in Freemont California. Curtis was injured in a post (AMA) season Super Moto Crash, and has been on the mend for three months. He finished a hard fought third place in the WSMC Formula One at Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond, California this past Sunday…his first competitive appearance since his surgery. The weekend also saw Curtis in an exciting WSMC Open Superbike race. After being forced to brake hard while passing a lapper on the final turn, Jason finished in second place. No Limit’s Dunlop shod 1000cc Superbikes, are built and tuned in NLMS’s California race shop by Poncho Rangel. NLMS appreciates the support and sponsorship of NLA Clothing and our many other supporters that have allowed us to build one of the better examples of a true Superbike to be found in the AMA Paddock. No Limit Motor Sports is looking forward to another good AMA Superbike Season for 2007. Curtis finished as TOP PRIVATEER of the 2006 AMA Superbike Series, with 13th in points overall. Working as a true Privateer, without factory support of any kind, Jason proved that he can ride and that his equipment can run with the best the USA has to offer. Look for No Limit Motor Sports in the Paddock as we prepare for our 5th full year of AMA racing.
