The Roadracing World Action Fund starts 2007 with over $16,000 in new donations, pushing the overall grand total to $523,644.70 raised over six years for track safety education and the deployment of soft barriers.
The Wegman Fund has closed its books with a donation of $8000 to the Roadracing World Action Fund. Founder Gordon Lunde wrote, ” Please accept this final donation from the Wegman Benefit Fund for the Roadracing World Action Fund. Thank you for helping racers across the country be safer through your tireless campaign to provide safer race tracks for everyone in this great sport. “
Racers raised money for the Action Fund through the internet with T-shirt sales, a contest and a raffle.
“Mongo Who?” T-shirt sales generated $1000 for the Action Fund. Mark Peterson wrote, “Fasttrack Motorsports Promotion in partnership with WERA and Steve Brunton would like to thank everyone who purchased a shirt for a great cause. FMP is grateful to be selected to help with the design and online sales. We continue to sell these online at http://fastrackpromo.com. All profits go to the RW Action Fund.”
This year’s WERA BBS Fantasy Football League losers each sent in a minimum of $20 to the Roadracing World Action Fund (as the rules require). This year’s losers included Papa Thiam, Darrin Talbott, Darren (Mark) Reeser ($25), generating a total of $65. Roadracing World Action Fund’s Most Frequent Contributor Talbott then added an additional $200, dedicating the donation to the WERA BBS Fantasy Football League.
An online raffle raised $1060 in honor of fallen racer Shannon Bitzer. Raffle organizer James Lock wrote, “This money was raised with the help of the fine folks at chicagolandsportbikes.com, nesba.com and the zrxoa.org sites in honor of our friend Shannon Bitzer, who was in a fatal crash July 31, 2005 at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in Illinois. We raffled off his sport chock at his wife’s request (Nancy) to be donated to a charity. I chose the Action Fund for its work to protect the people who enjoy the sport Shannon loved so much.”
Donations made in memory of Charles Turner continued, with George Hovanec donating $100 and David Dye, $50.
David Dye wrote: “Sorry to read about Buddy Turner’s death. He was a friend and mentor in the 1980s and 1990s, loaned me leathers, took racing photos of me, and remained an avid motorcyclist. He will be missed, not only by his Mark and Scott, but by many more of us. “
