Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich turned the fastest time of the second morning of the two-day Pirelli tire test Friday at Daytona International Raceway. Riding his Superstock-spec GSX-R1000, Ulrich recorded a 1:43.192, faster than the 1:43.421 he did Thursday afternoon in spite of much colder temperatures and winds gusting from 25-35 mph Friday. “I did that time on my first tire this morning. That was the tire I liked the best from yesterday,” said Ulrich. “But more than anything, I’m feeling a lot better today. I think I’ve fully recovered from my recent trip to South Africa. “We’re only using hard, single-compound tires, not Daytona-specific rubber. Our mission is to get ready for the race next spring, so there won’t be any blistering fast laps at this test.” Matt Lynn was second-fastest Friday morning with a 1:43.744 on his Fast By Ferracci MV Agusta F4-1000R, which is currently closer to a streetbike than a Superbike. With the cold temperatures, Lynn focused on testing a new gearing set up. Lynn’s father, Britt Lynn, a machinist, machined down a new, steel countershaft sprocket for Lynn’s bike overnight in a local racer’s garage, thinning it from a 530 to a 520. Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Geoff May parked his Superstock GSX-R1000 and started testing Pirelli’s new Diablo Supercorsa DOT-labeled race tires on his GSX-R600 Supersport bike Friday morning. After turning a 1:44.899 in the challenging conditions, May said the new tires were a definite improvement. May’s teammate Michael Barnes will not ride any more at the test. Barnes told Roadracingworld.com that he had accomplished everything he needed to do on Thursday. Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s third rider Michael Beck has returned to California, where he will have his injured left arm operated on. Beck broke his arm when he highsided from his GSX-R600 Supersport bike Thursday morning. Lynn’s teammate Luca Scassa, who broke bones in his left foot in a highside crash Thursday afternoon, will not need to have surgery, according to FBF Team Owner Eraldo Ferracci. Attack Kawasaki’s Steve Rapp and Ben Attard swapped motorcycles Friday, with Rapp working on the team’s 2007 ZX-6R Formula Xtreme bike and Attard switching to a 2006 ZX-6RR Supersport machine, which suffered an engine failure just before lunchtime. Hotbodies/Cory West Racing’s Cory West, Hotbodies/Longevity Racing’s Barrett Long and Moto Uno Racing’s Taylor Knapp also rode their Supersport bikes Friday morning, but Knapp’s run was cut short when his Kawasaki ZX-6RR’s clutch failed.
