Hotbodies Racing Suzuki’s Taylor Knapp, 19, is out of the WERA Grand National Finals and Suzuki Cup Finals after breaking his right femur in a crash during practice Friday morning at Road Atlanta.

Knapp lost the front of his Suzuki SV1000 in turn four and slid into an Airfence- and tire-protected barrier just off the edge of the racing surface. According to several accounts of the incident, Knapp’s bike preceded him into the barriers, displacing the inflatable section of Airfence and the tire wall behind it. Knapp then slid partially under both barriers. Somewhere in the process, his right femur was broken cleanly in two.

According to his Crew Chief, Tom Godward, Knapp is scheduled to have a rod surgically inserted into his broken femur Friday night at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, in Gainesville, Georgia.

Jeff Selbert suffered shoulder and back injuries in a separate incident shortly after the start of Friday’s WERA National Endurance finale. Selbert was piloting the Ed Bargy Racing Endurance Suzuki GSX-R750 when he crested the turn 11 hill, under the Suzuki Bridge, and found the Wikle Racing Suzuki GSX-R600 lying on its side in the middle of the track. Selbert could not avoid the downed machine, collided with it and was catapulted into the air and down the hill. The full extent of Selbert’s injuries were not available from WERA at post time.

The Wikle Racing Suzuki apparently also put fluid on the track when it crashed, causing three other machines to go down, including the Roadracingworld.com Kawasaki Ninja 650 ridden by 12-year-old Elena Myers. Myers was uninjured and immediately walked, unassisted, back to the pits.
