Qualifying for the 10th AMA Sports Road Race Grand Championships was postponed Friday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, in Lexington, Ohio, due to rain actually due to not enough rain.

Practice was delayed Friday morning when a light rain dampened the track, resulting in conditions that were deemed too slick for DOT-labeled tries and not wet enough for rain tires.

The track dried during an early lunch break, and practice resumed on a dry track Friday afternoon. Practice was then immediately followed by short, timed qualifying sessions for the Expert and Expert Pro-Am classes, but only eight of the 12 scheduled sessions got in before the rain returned, bringing a halt to on-track activities for the day.

“We didn’t get enough rain,” said Sean Clarke, Operations Manager for WERA Motorcycle Roadracing; WERA is handling operations at the Grand Championships. “There were three or four areas of the track where it was too slippery, where there was rubber built up, and there wasn’t enough rain to wash the rubber away. And by the time it really started raining, we were running out of time to finish the day.”

Clarke inspected the track, with AMA racer Chris Ulrich and former AMA racer and current race tuner Ed Sorbo, during the rain in a Mid-Ohio pace vehicle, while AMA Road Race Series Director Keith Kizer circulated the track in another Mid-Ohio pace vehicle with AMA racer Larry Pegram. At least one of the vehicles spun during the inspection; all of the parties also got out of the vehicles and felt the traction level by walking (and sliding) on different sections of pavement.

Ulrich (who races for Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki) and Pegram (who races for Leo Vince/Pegram Racing Honda) both said they agreed with Clarke’s decision and that the Street Bond-treated corners offered better traction in the wet than untreated sections of the track, where accelerating racebikes had laid down rubber by spinning the rear tire.

The remaining four qualifying sessions will be run Saturday morning.
