GARRETTSVILLE, Oh. With just three rounds remaining in the 2006 WERA National Series season, would-be endurance champions will have to compete with both their rival teams and the darkness this weekend at Nelson Ledges Road Course. WERA/Bridgestone National Endurance Series teams are busy preparing their machines for the nighttime during the eight-hour race on Saturday, September 9. The race gets underway at 3:30 p.m, with the sun still shining, and teams will race into the sunset before being plunged into darkness. Vesrah Suzuki will be looking for another win after proving last year that they can ride just as quickly at night. The Heavyweight Superbike team has both the class and overall championship lead by a comfortable margin. Behind Vesrah, though, Mediumweight Superbike team Red Star is holding onto second in the overall championship by 7.33 points over TVR II and 8.92 points over Team Velocity Racing. All three teams will be putting in extra effort to overcome the darkness and the challenges of lighting their race bikes. Team Velocity Racing won Heavyweight Superstock and took second overall last year at Nelson, but ARNCHU Racing was a close third. ARNCHU currently leads Team Velocity in the class championship by a narrow 9.986 points, and both teams will be anxious to perform well at Nelson with the season quickly winding down. Sunday will cap the weekend with the WERA/Michelin National Challenge Series sprint races. There will be 11 ten-lap races beginning at 12:30 p.m. Like the endurance series, the National Challenge Series has a number of championships that are still close after seven rounds. Race six is 750 Superstock expert, and the competition is between Vesrah Suzuki teammates Lee Acree and Mark Junge. Acree had a one-point lead coming into round seven at Summit Point Raceway, but a victory for Junge propelled him into the top spot with a slim two-point lead. This weekend’s 750 Superstock race is expected to be another whirlwind of yellow Vesrah Suzukis. Tickets for Friday’s qualifying and the weekend’s races are $30. Friday and Saturday only cost $20, and fans can see Sunday’s National Challenge Series action for $15. More information about WERA can be found online at www.WERA.com. Directions to Nelson Ledges can be found there, as well, in the track directory.
