Tim Knutson won the Willow Springs Solo GTU Championship going away with his 3rd win in a row. The 5 race mini-endurance series are 20 lap races ran on the high speed 2.5 mile 9 turn Willow Springs Raceway. Notoriously the roughest track for tires, Tim was able to give Bridgestone its’ first 600cc championship in anybody’s memory. This was especially impressive given that July’s temperature was 108 degrees and August was a cool 97. Tim was able to win both of those races going away using a medium front and soft rear slicks. The first two races of the series Tim finished 2nd. 

“I’ve got to take my hats off to Bridgestone for building such awesome tires, I mean even in July the tires had plenty of grip and you need to have the confidence to hold it wide open in the 6th gear Turn 8, I’d also like to thank Maxima Oils, Suomy Helmets, GPR Stabilizer, Sidi Boots, Leo Vince, VP race Fuels, and the whole WSMC staff for putting on such a great event every month.” Up next for Tim will be the Toyota 200, September 15-17.

KOPECKY WINS 3 ON MOTO FORZA DUCATI AT WSMC

After skipping the July WSMC meet due to family commitments, San Diego resident Kenny Kopecky rode his Moto Forza prepared, Dunlop shod Ducati 999R-05 to three wins at Willow Springs on Sunday. Arriving late in the day on Saturday at the track, he used the WSMC Solo 50 mile endurance race Saturday evening as his only practice on the Ducati in 9 weeks since his last race meet on June 18th.

“It felt really good to get back out on the 999 at Willow…within a few laps we were pretty comfortable, and even more so after pitting and making a couple small changes during that race yesterday” Kenny said Sunday after the sprint races. The race wins on Sunday came in BOTT Heavyweight, 750 Superbike, and Formula Twins Heavyweight expert classes.

Kenny turned a quick start and his fastest laps of the day to a relatively easy win in BOTT Heavyweight, with his second win coming in 750 Superbike where class Championship points leader Karl Lowry was on a borrowed bike after having difficulties with his regular race machine. “We were expecting a fun battle with Karl as he has been having a fantastic season…it was nice to see another WSMC member loan him a bike so he could finish at the front of his races.” Kopecky holeshot the 750 Superbike race from the 3rd row and rapidly distanced himself from Lowry, who was soon passed by Top Rookie Expert contender Ryan Gagliano. The race ended on a red-flag due to crashes in several locations around the racetrack, fortunatly none with serious injury. Kennys’ lead was just over 11 seconds after 5 laps.

The final race of the day for the WSMC #1 Ducati racer came in Formula Twins Heavyweight, and saw a strong early challenge from the 2004 WSMC Twins Class Champion (and current 2006 class point leader) Claudio Szyszkowski. He briefly passed Kenny on the front straight completing the 3rd of 8 race laps and led into turn 1. Kopecky turned underneath Szyszkowski and immediatly drove past on the exit of turn 1, and led the final 5 laps of the contest. Kenny added, “That final race was exciting for us…I was getting a little tired and maybe a little lazy as well, and Claudio was right there to perk us up a bit! The traffic was a little heavy as well…Claudio and I on our 999R’s lapped several people twice in the 8 lap sprint. Anyway, we had a grand time riding the Ducati on the racetrack again, and hope to be back for some of the upcoming monthly meets at Willow soon!”

The next WSMC meet is September 15-17, 2006 with all of the Expert sprint races being held on Saturday, Sept. 16, and on Sunday the 17th the novice class races will precede the Roadracing World 250/50 and the Toyota 200 mile road race.
