BMW North America’s Peter Maier, 50, suffered a broken left collarbone Thursday when he collided with a deer while participating in the 2006 BMW R 1200 S press introduction ride in Southern California. Maier was riding escort on an HP 2 Enduro bike (which had been fitted with an optional “Street Kit” that included 17-inch wheels and Continental street tires) west on Mulholland Highway, near the “Rock Store” biker hangout, at approximately 3:00 p.m. when a female deer darted between him and the rider in front of him on a relatively flat and straight stretch of the road. Maier said he had no time to react but remembered few other details about the incident. Hair from the deer was embedded in the front fender of Maier’s motorcycle, indicating a direct impact. It is unclear if Maier suffered his injury in the impact with the deer or when he fell off his motorcycle and hit the asphalt. Maier was attended to at the scene by others participating in the ride and local residents until police and an ambulance crew arrived. He was transported to Los Robles Hospital, in Thousand Oaks, California, where he spent Thursday night under observation. Maier was due to be released today and planned to fly back to New Jersey, where BMW North America headquarters is located. The deer died at the scene. The introduction ride started at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills and was headed for Malibu, California.
