Josh Herrin highsided his Graves Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R6 at the exit of the Keyhole during AMA Supersport qualifying Saturday afternoon at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Initially, Herrin thought his left thumb might be fractured, but the 16-year-old opted not to go to the hospital for X-rays Saturday evening and raced in the Supersport final Sunday. In the race, Josh Herrin’s bike overheated and overflowed some water onto the track, causing a red flag. As the cause of the red flag, he was forced to take the restart from the back of the grid, but he still worked his way up to 10th by the checkered flag. After the race, Josh Herrin said his thumb hurt but probably wasn’t broken. Hotbodies Racing’s Garrett Carter also crashed his Yamaha during AMA Supersport qualifying Saturday at Mid-Ohio, falling at the entrance to high-speed turn two. Carter was completely uninjured, but the same could not be said for his motorcycle. His YZF-R6 was completely destroyed, suffering a broken frame, swingarm, triple clamps, shock and both wheels. Carter’s team hoped to salvage the engine. Attack Kawasaki’s Damon Buckmaster lowsided his ZX-6RR in turn 11, a tricky turn with very little run-off room, during the AMA Supersport race Sunday. Buckmaster’s bike went into the Airfence safety barriers, but he did not. He suffered no injury. Michael Jordan Motorsports Suzuki’s Steve Rapp highsided his GSX-R1000 spectacularly coming onto the front straight early in the Superstock race. Rapp wanted to restart the race on his back-up bike but was not allowed per the rulebook. Later, Rapp sat out the Superbike race due to pain in his right ankle. Sunday night Rapp had the ankle X-rayed at a local hospital and no fractures were found, but he told Roadracingworld.com Monday morning that he planned to have his physician at home examine the ankle for soft tissue damage. American Honda’s Jake Zemke crashed his CBR1000RR at over 136 mph as he leaned into turn 12, a fast, right-hand sweeper, during Saturday’s Superbike race. Zemke went for a long but otherwise smooth slide on the asphalt and was uninjured. Zemke’s Honda slid farther and faster and hit the Airfence-fronted barrier outside of turn 13 hard enough to become airborne. Immediately after his crash, Zemke was seen on television monitors signing autographs for fans. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Aaron Yates got off to a rough start at Mid-Ohio crashing both of his GSX-R1000s during the first practice Friday morning. The first crash came just as Yates started braking for turn 14, the Carousel. Both Yates and his Suzuki hit the tire-fronted barrier hard. Yates was relatively uninjured compared to his GSX-R1000. Later in the session, Yates crashed his second GSX-R1000, in left-hand turn 13. Again, Yates escaped without major injury. Each crash caused a red flag. Airfence was later put in front of sections of the barrier that Yates hit. In Sunday’s Superbike race, Yates had closed up considerable ground on Parts Unlimited Ducatis’ Ben Bostrom and was preparing to pass the Californian down the back straightaway. Bostrom, however, highsided his 999 at the exit of the Keyhole. Yates, who was inches behind Bostrom, could not avoid Bostrom and also crashed. Neither rider was seriously injured, and both were later seen signing autographs for fans in the paddock. Rapp’s teammate Jason Pridmore was heavily battered when he highsided at the exit of the Keyhole during Saturday’s Superbike race. Pridmore skipped the Superstock race Sunday morning to save himself for the second Superbike final. The plan paid off as he finished sixth, in spite of his left arm going numb during the race.
