Twenty-one year old Brendan Roberts extended his lead this weekend in the Metzeler National Superstock Series after taking a fifth position in Saturday’s race and the race win yesterday, 2nd July. After the cancellation of the double barrelled round which was due to take place at Mondello Park, the Superstock Class were allocated two races alongside the illustrious Moto GP race at Donington Park. With a capacity crowd in excess of 80,000 people and in the baking hot sunshine Roberts was on a mission to ensure that he gained strong points in the two races. Qualifying in sixth position on the grid, the Grantham based rider had his work cut out. A poor start in the first race saw Roberts slip back to seventh position, he was locked in a dice with Steve Allen and Guy Sanders for sixth. The young Australian settled into the race but was unable to catch the front runners after they had pulled a small margin on the chasing pack. A last lap manoeuvre saw Roberts take sixth place in the race, after a technical investigation race winner Adrian Coates was excluded from the race, which saw Roberts promoted to fifth. A more relaxed Roberts took to the grid on Sunday feeling more confident about the race. Roberts a better start as he exited Redgate in fifth position, with his sights set on the leaders he went to work as he closed the gap to the front. Braking late into the last corner, Goddards, Roberts made some impressive and confident passes as he went under Hudson Kennagh, Ian Hutchinson, Marshall Neill and finally race leader Coates on the penultimate lap. More positions were exchanged on the final lap between the front three and once again he managed to master a pass on Coates as they powered out of the Old Hairpin, Roberts crossed the line a mere half second in front of Coates with Neill rounding out the podium. Taking his third win of the season Roberts now has a 43 point lead over his nearest rival and was delighted with his results commenting “It was great to finish the weekend on top and prove to everyone that I’m on top of my game. Saturday was really difficult as I had the speed but couldn’t get clear, so to have come through the pack and to take another win was awesome. I’m now looking forward to Wednesday as Rizla Suzuki are giving me a chance to test their Superbike, fingers crossed I’ll be able to fill in for the injured James Haydon, only time will tell.”
