ASRA Team Challenge Round 5 Summit Point Raceway Moon’s Super Cycle II Dominates at Summit. From the drop of the green flag it was all Moon’s Super Cycle II for the next 78 laps as Calvin Martinez and crew displayed a mastery of Summit Point Raceway not seen before. This Mid-West based team wasn’t supposed to dominate the race the way they did, as local favorites Fast Lane Cycle (Rick Beggs & Kevin Tate) had the most experienced team with hundreds if not thousands of laps around Summit Point, but were unable to translate the seat time into a win. The only machine to give serious chase to Moon’s II was Speedwerks Racing (Geoff Doyer & Charlie Coleman) the eventual winner of the GTU class. In the end, Speedwerks was able to keep their hopes alive by unlapping themselves when Scott Harwood, riding for the defending champion Moon’s Super Cycle II, pitted for the first time at lap 55 giving Doyer and Coleman an opening they were not able to capitalize on. Speedwerks Racing, the GTU winner, finished as the only other bike on the lead lap with the overall winner Moon’s Super Cycle. In the GTO class it was Moon’s, with Calvin Martinez and Harwood followed by Fast Lane Racing GTO, then the Reach Around Racing Team of Shay Marlin, Jeremy Turner and John Jenkins aboard. The Mid-Illini/NFC Racing machine had an early tumble that took them out of contention, but the soldiered on to finish fourth on GTO and 13th Overall. The GTU class saw a great battle between Speedwerks and Speedy Monster Racing as they ran in first and second place for 50 of the 78 laps with 3S Motorsports in third a lap behind Speedy Monster. In the remaining 28 laps, Michael Murray and the 3S Motorsports team moved ahead of Speedy Monster to take second in class and fourth overall. Surprisingly, by the 55th lap of the event, the GTL leader Team All-stars were all alone in fifth place overall ahead of the faster third place machines in both GTO and GTU. Sean Marston and his All-stars teammate Arnold Hastings upset series regulars Mighty Lumina (Bill Davenport & Daniel Riter) and Team LMB (Neil Frank, Max Grant & Sean Kerns) who finished second and third respectively in GTL. The A&J Solo Challenge competitors had to finish 73 laps in 95+ temperatures and it took its toll. Normally, the Solo riders run high in the overall rankings, but with nature against them it was a race of attrition. With a true display of courage, Robert Lombardi, who crashed at Heartland Park-Topeka and cracked several ribs, made the Solo start and led the second place machine of Travis McNerney on the Fast Lane Solo entry by two full laps at the 60 lap mark and held on to that advantage to the end. Brian Gregory with “Da Sheep-R-Skeared Racing” was third with a solid ride in the A&J Solo class, three laps down to Lombardi at the finish.
