Butler Machinery’s Robert Jensen won in Sportbike, Bryan Bemisderfer claimed the victory in Thunderbike and Tim Bemisderfer (Bryan’s brother) took first place in Superbike at round five of the eight-round ASRA Championship series on a rainy Sunday at Virginia International Raceway, near Danville, Virginia. Tim Bemisderfer won first on his Dunlop-shod Shenandoah Honda CBR600RR in Superbike, while Arclight Suzuki’s Jeff Wood, the Superbike Championship leader, came back from a big moment early in the wet race to finish second. Absolutecycleperformance.com’s Ryan Patterson was third on a Pirelli-fitted Yamaha YZF-R6. Harley-Davidson/Buell of Frederick’s Bryan Bemisderfer slid off track during the even-wetter Thunderbike final but still came back to pass Veatch Motorsports Buell’s Dave Estok on the last lap to take his first win of the 2006 season and extend his Championship points advantage. Riding in what he described as the most dangerous rain conditions he had ever raced in, Estok finished second, well ahead of Suzuki SV650-mounted Arnold Hastings. Championship contenders Nate Kern and Dan Bilansky both crashed out early in the eight-lap Thunderbike final. Jensen passed Wood on the front straightaway to take the lead on the second lap of the premier event, Sportbike. Seconds later, Wood crashed at well over 100 mph when he hit a puddle — before the braking zone — at the end of the front straightaway. Wood was uninjured in the fall, and Jensen built up a three-second lead. Tim Bemisderfer got a bad start but was able to reel Jensen back in through the middle of the race. Jensen then upped his pace and pulled away to a sizeable margin of victory on his Michelin-tired Suzuki GSX-R600. Tim Bemisderfer took second, while Martinmoto.com’s Michael Himmelsbach finished a distant third on his Triumph Daytona 675. The day started dry, but rain intensified during the day and led to standing water and rivers on the racetrack. No riders were seriously injured Sunday.
