PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports that President George W. Bush intends to nominate Nicole R. Nason, of Virginia, to be Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the Department of Transportation. “When Ms. Nason assumes her post as NHTSA’s next Administrator, the AMA will ask to meet with her as soon as possible,” said Robert Rasor, AMA President. “In addition to welcoming her, as the leading voice for American motorcyclists we intend to help her become acquainted with the issues that are important to the AMA’s 260,000 members and all motorcyclists.” Among the most important of those issues, according to the AMA, is increasing motorcycling fatalities. Last year, the AMA was instrumental in securing $3 million in federal funding, as part of the $286.4 billion transportation bill, for the first nationwide motorcycle-crash study in almost 30 years. That study, which will be conducted by Oklahoma State University’s Oklahoma Transportation Center, is expected to begin soon. Ms. Nason currently serves as Assistant Secretary of Transportation for Governmental Affairs. Prior to this, she served as Assistant Commissioner for the Office of Congressional Affairs for the United States Customs Service. Ms. Nason also served as Communications Director and Counsel to Representative Porter J. Goss. Earlier in her career, she served as Governmental Affairs Counsel at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Ms. Nason received her bachelor’s degree from the American University and her JD from Case Western Reserve.
