Arroyo Seco Raceway Sept 11, 2005 Ivan Garza wins Formula Arroyo Unlimited GP at Arroyo Seco Raceway Ivan Garza was the man of the day at Arroyo Seco Raceway, winning the Formula Arroyo Unlimited GP race, and nearly every other race he entered. He was only seriously challenged in one race, the Heavyweight Superbike race. The challenge came from Roger Heemsbergen, track owner and series president. Heemsbergen won the race just in front of Garza, ironically riding a GSX-R750 he bought just weeks before from Garza. “I thought Roger (Heemsbergen) was only going to do track days on it, I didn’t know he was going to race it. Maybe selling it to him wasn’t such a good idea,” Garza joked. Heemsbergen finished second to Garza in the Formula Arroyo Unlimited GP race, followed by former ASMA champion Mike Shreve. Shreve passed Ball Sac Racing’s Tom Savoca on the last lap, after Savoca ran third for most of the race, often pressuring Heemsbergen for second. Heemsbergen showed impressive speed on his new GSX-R750 in its first weekend on the track. The only other race Garza entered but didn’t win was the Heavyweight Supersport race where he mistakenly gridded on his ex-Lion Racing GSX-R1000 superstock bike, which is not legal for Heavyweight Supersport. That race was won by Mike Shreve. Heemsbergen won the Team Sprints race teamed with fast amateur Jeremy Hale on Hale’s 2001 GSX-R750. Hale was impressive in every race he entered, winning his races by large margins. Hale jumped immediately into the lead of the Team Sprints race and handed the bike to Heemsbergen in the lead, which Heemsbergen maintained for the win. Ivan Garza has shown an impressive increase in speed this year, likely due to his numerous appearances at AMA nationals throughout the year. Garza knows Arroyo Seco well and is translating his experience at other tracks into race wins this year in the ASMA series.
