Ty Howard turned back all challengers, including AMA regulars John Haner, Cory West, Danny Eslick, and Heath Small, en route to five class wins and an $11,000 payday at round eight of the CMRA Championship Series held at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, near Hallett, Oklahoma.
Haner and West pushed Howard especially hard on the hilly 1.8-mile course, and both set new track records for the clockwise direction in pursuit of Howard, but it was the Typhoon-sponsored Howard who set the final record of the day, a 1:16.835, posted during the A Superstock Expert race. Previous to this weekend, Robert Jensen had held the old record for the clockwise direction, a 1:17.62, set on 7/20/03.
With the record, Howard picked up $150 for winning the Mr. Corder Racing Fast Lap Award.
Howard’s wins came in the Racing Performance Services B Superstock Expert race, which features a $150 purse, the C Superstock Expert, which features a $500 purse, the Pace American Trailers Formula 1 Expert race, which features a $1000 purse, the Sum of all Parts A Superstock Expert race, which features a $150 purse and the RaceworX C Superbike Expert race, which features a $150 purse.
West took home approximately $1500 after topping the Motorcycles Unlimited A Superbike Expert Race, which features a $150 purse, and claiming second place finishes behind Howard in the Pace American Trailers Formula 1 Expert race and the Sum of all Parts A Superstock Expert race.
Over 430 sprint entries graced the Hallett grids on Sunday, while 39 Big Bike Endurance teams and 27 Mini Endurance teams lined up on Saturday.
Other money-class winners included Tyler McDonald, who won the 125 GP class, which features a $250 purse; Dustin Dominguez, who won the South Central Race Center D Superbike Expert race, which features a $150 purse; Will Gruy, who won the Super Motard race, which features a $250 purse; Eric Falt, who won the Lightweight Twins Expert race, which features a $500 purse; Bryan West, who won the Komodo Racing B Superbike Expert race, which features a $250 purse and Jon Francis, who won the AF1 Racing Heavyweight Twins Expert race, which pays an end of the year purse.
Cory Burleson once again had a stellar day in the Novice ranks, taking six wins.
In Saturday’s Shogun Motorsports Mini Endurance Series race, Team K&N suffered mechanical problems during the final hour of the 2-hour event and lost several minutes in the pits making repairs, but came from behind to claim their fifth win of the year, keeping their perfect record intact for 2005.
RS Express finished second overall, just 11 seconds behind Team K&N, and extended their narrow gap in the overall series points standings over Team Jesus to 12 points with the finish.
Team Jesus finished on the same lap as Team K&N and RS Express to grab the third place position, while Team Sidewinder and Tacos Bob’s Racing rounded out the top five in the overall standings and the Formula 4 division.
Team Extreme Powersports finished sixth overall to claim the win in the Formula 5 division, while STD Racing 2 won the Formula 6 class with a 12th overall finish.
Speed Demonz finished 16th overall to win the Formula 7 division.
In the Shogun Motorsports Endurance Series 6-hour race for big bikes, also held on Saturday, Northwest Honda Racing, with Logan Young on board, came from just over a lap down during the final hour, in the rain, to pass Desert-Rats.net on the final lap for the win. Desert-Rats.net held on for second overall and claimed the win in the A Superstock division, as well.
With the overall win, Northwest Honda Racing extended their lead in the series overall standings to more than 300 points over Dersert-Rats.net.
Third place on the day, and first in the C Superstock class, went to KNMotorcycles.com, who called on the experienced wet-riding skills of former AMA National Champion Sam McDonald to supplement the youth and energy of Tyler McDonald and Will Gruy.
Team O’Donnell won the C Superbike division with a fourth overall finish, while Fireball Racing claimed the Formula 2 win in 12th overall.
In the Mini Sprint divisions, Tyler McDonald topped Zac Chapman and Alex Humphries for the Formula 4 win, while Conner Blevins took the Formula 6 win over Dennis Dudley and Garet Tomlinson.
Derek Wagnon beat Jesse Davis to the line for the Formula 5 win, with Richard Eads coming home in third, while Conner Blevins returned to win the Formula 7 class over Jason Keene and Dirk Anderson.
The CMRA series moves to Oak Hill Raceway, near Henderson, Texas, for round nine of the series.
