Kneedraggers.com’s Robert Jensen won the Formula USA Sportbike and Formula Sportbike National races Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park, in Birmingham, Alabama.

Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Michael Barnes topped the Superbike field, and Millville & Wildwood Harley-Davidson/Buell’s Dave Estok tasted victory in Thunderbike.

Arclight Suzuki’s Jeff Wood, however, maintained his commanding Championship leads in Sportbike, Formula Sportbike and Superbike with podium-finishes in each class.

Barnes started the afternoon race program by coming out on top of the action-packed Superbike (600cc) race, using the horsepower of his Pirelli-shod AMA Formula Xtreme-spec Suzuki GSX-R600 to hold off his teammate Geoff May, who rode an AMA Supersport-spec GSX-R600. Wood came back from a costly off-track excursion to finish third, right behind the lead pair at the checkered flag. Jensen, who also ran off track, finished fourth on his Yamaha.

Riding a Pirelli-fitted Buell XB12R Firebolt, Estok was chased for the entire 14-lap Thunderbike final by Hal’s Performance Advantage/Richie Morris Racing Buell’s Dan Bilansky. On the final lap, Estok caught a break that sealed the victory, allowing him to take the Thunderbike Championship point lead from CAD Cycles’ David Yaakov, who finished third on a Suzuki SV650. Bilansky finished second.

Jensen came back to win the 18-lap Sportbike (600cc) race on his Michelin-sponsored YZF-R6, beating Wood by three bikelengths at the finish line. May was a close third, but his GSX-R600 went 0.4 horsepower over the maximum limit in post-race dyno checks and he was docked three finishing positions. Brian Stokes, who rode a Matt Reed Racing Yamaha YZF-R6, was promoted to third.

In Formula Sportbike, Jensen ran away to win by 23 seconds over Wood, who conceded the race to Jensen early in exchange for safely maintaining his Championship lead with second place. Roadracingworld.com’s Chris Ulrich finished third, collecting the first National podium finish of his injury-plagued 2005 season.
