Yoshimura Suzuki’s Ben Spies, 20, claimed the AMA Supersport pole position during qualifying Saturday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Spies’ time of 1:29.074 topped the previous lap record, set by Jamie Hacking at 1:29.406 in 2003.

It was Spies’ second AMA Supersport pole position of the 2004 season.

Yamaha’s Jason DiSalvo, who crashed hard earlier in the day, qualified second with a 1:29.307.

Kawasaki’s Roger Lee Hayden qualified third – and was also under the old lap record – with a 1:29.333.

Current AMA Supersport Championship leader Tommy Hayden (1:29.404) will start his Kawasaki from the outside of row one on Sunday.
