Anthony Gobert Returns To AMA Professional Road Race Series

Former champion and fan-favorite Gobert to join his brother, Alex, on the Erion/Honda Racing Team and will contest the AMA Superstock Series/Repsol Moto class

ANAHEIM, Calif., (March 31, 2004) – The spirited, well-liked and fast-as-heck Anthony “Go Show” Gobert is back in the United States aboard an Erion Racing-tuned Honda CBR1000RR and should be an immediate threat in the hotly contested AMA Superstock Series/Repsol Moto class, beginning this weekend in Fontana, Calif.

Gobert, who won Fontana two years ago in the Superbike class, has had one test session (Laguna) aboard the Erion/CBR and is definitely “stoked” as to the potential for success that he and the bike share.

“Considering I hadn’t ridden a street bike in about six months, my times weren’t really that far off,” said Gobert. “It’s not the preparation that you’d ideally like to start the season, and it’s going to take a bit of work to get up to speed. But I’m really excited about this opportunity, especially getting back with Honda.”

Gobert and Honda have some deep roots in racing as his last championship, the 1994 Australian Superbike title, was won on a Winfield Honda RC45.

“I’ve always felt that Honda has the best bikes and most devoted people,” he added.

So what’s Gobert been up to the past several months? “You know, I’ve been traveling so much for so long, I felt it was a good time to get back with some friends that I grew up with and spend some time with them,” said Gobert. “Let them know I still care about them and stuff.”

As far as training, Gobert admitted he didn’t spend much time in the gym since his departure from the AMA Superbike Series midway through the season last year. “I made sure I stayed fit, but more with motocross, jet skiing and things like that,” he said. “I stayed away from the gym and have come in slimmer up top and lighter. So I’m excited to see how it pans out.”

Gobert admits that while fans will still see the ‘Flash’ they expect with his racing, that it may take him a couple races to get back into sync and – hopefully – reel off a podium finish in the not-to-distant future.

“Fontana will be a tough call,” said Gobert. “I’m definitely going to try my hardest to come straight out of the box and get a win for Honda. But, realistically, I’m going to try and get out of Fontana with some points and then put some more miles on the bike, focus on Sears (April 30 – May 2) and hopefully come away with a podium there.”

One of Gobert’s main competitors will be his brother, Aaron, who won the opening round of the superstock class at Daytona. On racing Aaron: “Oh, it’ll be fun,” said Gobert. “We’ve mucked around on dirt bikes in the past and it’ll be the same on street bikes.”

Gobert has a one-year contract with the Erion/Honda program, which also includes his brother Alex and Jake Zemke.

In addition, Gobert will be doing an autograph session on Saturday, April 3rd, between 5:15-6:15 p.m. at the track with other Superbike Series racers. He will also be featured on the air with Speed Freaks on Sunday, April 4th, at 8:00 p.m. PST.
