MotoE™ Summit takes place in Barcelona

Dorna hosts first ever MotoE™ themed convention bringing together teams and sponsors

The first ever race weekend for the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup will take place alongside the Gran Premio Red Bull de España in May, but the agenda is full ahead of the debut and it’s all action behind the scenes. Preparing for a whole new class of competition to become part of the MotoGP™ World Championship is a challenge that brings together everyone involved in the Cup, and the MotoE™ Summit was designed to detail all aspects of this new parallel path of racing.

Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta was the first speaker and introduced the Summit, detailing the role of Dorna in MotoGP™, motorcycle racing and now the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup. He emphasised the personality of each of the teams and the goals of the Cup, which he laid out as being focused on high quality racing.

“The goal is to develop this Cup, along with all the partners, and to develop it as much as we can. To have competitive races that we develop over the next three years. The main aim of the Cup is to have a new competition in the World Championship; that’s the idea and we hope you’re all happy to compete and be part of it.”

Dorna Sports Managing Director Pau Serracanta recounted the birth of MotoE™ and the MotoGP™ partners who join the project as well as those who come on board for the new Cup. Dorna Sports Managing Director Manel Arroyo talked about the incredible TV and broadcast presence that will be a key part of this new competition within the MotoGP™ World Championship. Social media, the communications plan for the new Cup and its presence in the MotoGP VIP Village™ were on the agenda, too – giving the room a detailed overview of each and their roles.

Executive Director of the Cup, Nicolas Goubert, took a key role in proceedings. Giving an overview of everything about the competition itself from the number of laps to the design and layout of the E-Paddock, the intricate workings of the Cup were explained. That included focus on the teams, riders and safety, as well as how long the races would be and one important fact: ensuring the power is constant from the start to the end of each 15-minute race.

Motorbike manufacturer Energica were represented on stage by CEO Livia Cevolini and CTO Giampiero Testoni, and they talked about the company’s interest in the world of electric motorcycles and how it grew to see them create the machinery chosen to compete in the Cup. CEO Francesco Venturini represented Enel X, who are the title sponsor and set to power the Cup using renewable energy, to talk through the challenge of powering this newest class of competition.

Executive Director of the Cup Nicolas Goubert closed proceedings, and the next MotoE™ action will come from the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto from the 13th to 15th March with testing.

ENERGICA SHINES IN MOTOE BARCELONA SUMMIT

The impressive and luxurious Fairmont Rey Juan Carlos I resort hotel in Barcelona was the venue chosen to host the first-ever MotoETM summit, which gathered together representatives from all the parties involved in this new, electrifying chapter of motorcycle racing history. The centre stage was taken, as expected, by the stunning Ego Corsa, the all-electric superbike built by Energica that will be ridden by some of the best riders the world of two-wheeled motorsport has to offer.

And from this stage, Energica’s CEO Livia Cevolini underlined the company’s commitment to electric excellence applied to both the road and track, with the excitement for the upcoming first edition of the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup palpable in the convention room.

“We have always been marked as innovators” says Livia Cevolini “or even dreamers, as we have always paved new roads, finding new paths, looking beyond, even besides trends. […] We turned a vision into something completely new, a product that did not exist before. And we created it from a totally white sheet. Being the unique manufacturer for this project is actually the consecration of our product as a reference point in the world of high-performing motorcycling, and of course a confirmation of the great work done to date.”

The task or giving an in-depth look at Energica’s products was left to Energica’s CTOGiampiero Testoni, the mastermind behind all the projects developed by the Modena-based company since its creation in 2014.

“Our products come from a team of specialists who have been able to take the electric to another level: a 100% green vehicle completely homologated with racing performance. We have focused on high-end materials and designed innovative engineering solutions to guarantee our customers a premium line of electric motorcycles.”

The latest addition to this exciting range of vehicles is the MotoE-dedicated Ego Corsa, a bike with an environmental-friendly core but capable of superlative levels of performance.

“The green heart of the race bike Ego Corsa is a synchronous oil-cooled motor with permanent magnets” he continues. “It allows a maximum continuous power of 110 kW (147 hp/cv) and a torque of 200 Nm. Ego Corsa accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds reaching a top speed of 250 km/h.”

Preparations for the 2019 FIM Enel MotoETM World Cup are proceeding at high pace, with Energica working closely alongside MotoE promoter Dorna, sponsors, teams and riders. Pre-season on-track action will resume in a month’s time at Jerez de la Frontera in Spain for the first test of 2019 (13-15 March).
