1200cc Twins Approved For 2008 AMA Superbike Championship

Although its 2008 road racing rulebook is yet to be released online, AMA Pro Racing has issued supplemental rules outlining how 1000 – 1200cc Twins can be raced in the 2008 AMA Superbike Championship. The technical rules for 1000 – 1200cc Twins are very similar to those governing 1000cc multi-cylinder bikes with one notable exception. Big Twins will have minimum weight requirements of 385 pounds without fuel or 390 pounds with fuel. Those limits are 15 pounds higher than the 2007 limits of 1000cc multi-cylinder bikes, 370 pounds without fuel and 375 pounds with fuel. One hot topic of debate was the rules surrounded pistons for the big Twins, specifically if bikes like the 1198cc Ducati 1098R homologation special would be allowed to use racing kit pistons. That has been answered, and AMA Pro Racing will allow the use of homologated piston kits.
