Supermoto racing traces its roots to the 1980s when race promoter Gavin Trippe was commissioned by ABC’s Wide World Of Sports to create a made-for-TV event called “Superbikers.” Intended to recognize the best all-around motorcycle racers, Superbikers featured star riders from flat track, motocross, and road racing competing on racetracks that included elements of all three disciplines of riding—dirt sections, paved sections, and jumps. Most of the riders used large-displacement off-road motorcycles fitted with bigger brakes, lowered suspension, and flat track tires.
