Riverside Motorsports Park, a proposed $250 million, eight-track, 1200-acre motorsports park in California, is one step closer to becoming a reality after the Merced County Board of Supervisors tentatively approved development plans in a regularly schedule meeting earlier this week. During the meeting, which began in the evening of December 12 and continued until 2:30 a.m. December 13, the five-member Board approved six different issues relating to Riverside Motorsports Park. Another meeting of the Merced County Board of Supervisors is scheduled for December 19 for final votes on “remaining issues related to the approval of the project,” according to Riverside Motorsports Park’s website, www.rmpracing.com. According to an Associated Press report, some of the 300 attendees to the meeting spoke in opposition to the track, citing pollution, noise and traffic concerns. Riverside Motorsports Park will be located adjacent to Castle Airport (formerly known as Castle Air Force Base) in California’s Central Valley, along State Highway 99 between Modesto to the north and Fresno to the south and about 60 miles east of San Jose. Plans for the park call for a 7/8-mile, banked, paved, D-ring speedway; a 5000-foot drag strip; a 3/4-mile kart course; 1/2- and 1/3-mile paved ovals; 1/8- and 3/8-mile dirt ovals, a 3/4-mile motocross course with integrated BMX bicycle track; an off-road circuit; and a 3.5-mile road course that can be set up in 40 different configurations. The project is also said to include RV parking, a lake and a midway area with restaurants, bars, a video arcade and retail shops. Riverside Motorsports Park’s website says that it has statements of interest from 50 U.S. and International motorsports sanctioning bodies and organizations. Riverside Motorsports Park, LLC, is led by founder, Chairman and CEO John F.S. Codren, a marketing executive who currently competes in the GT America Road Racing Series. Multiple calls to Riverside Motorsports Park Thursday were not returned at post time.
