Josh Day High-Sides From His #00 Yamaha YZF-R1 During MotoAmerica Practice; Injury Rules Him Out Of Sunday’s Races
Braselton, GA – In motorcycle road racing, crashes are an unfortunate, but fairly regular, part of the sport, as riders push their motorcycles to the absolute limits of acceleration, cornering, and tire adhesion. During Saturday’s MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock 1000 morning practice at Road Atlanta, Yamalube/Westby Racing’s Josh Day battled with the laws of physics…and on this day, physics won.
While putting down fast laps during the session, and running second-fastest in the Superstock 1000 class at the time, Josh suffered a bizarre high-side, which threw him off his #00 Yamaha YZF-R1. Josh’s bike lost rear traction, causing a rear slide, which then caused his front tire to shudder and bounce across the pavement. The incident ultimately threw Josh to the pavement where his Arai helmet, Spidi leathers, and Sidi boots did their jobs to minimize injury.
The session was red-flagged while cornerworkers attended to Josh and his bike. Josh went to Road Atlanta’s medical center, initially, and then his wife Lauren drove him to Barrow Regional Medical Center in nearby Winder, GA, where X-rays revealed multiple fractures of Josh’s left thumb.
Josh has been ruled out of Sunday’s two Superbike/Superstock 1000 races, but he plans to race at the next MotoAmerica round, which will be at New Jersey Motorsports Park in two weeks.
“I’m having surgery on Tuesday with Dr. Keith Lamberson at Ortho Atlanta,” Josh said when he returned to the MotoAmerica paddock at Road Atlanta later in the day on Saturday. “Dr. Lamberson plans to insert a plate and pin into my thumb, and the prognosis is that I will be able to test it at New Jersey in two weeks. If all goes well, I will be ready to race.”
