STALL WINS 2015 CENTRAL ROADRACING CHAMPIONSHIP, DREW AND FRIENDS WIN 5 HOUR ENDURANCE

The Central Roadracing Association held its 2015 season finale over the September 18-20 weekend on Brainerd International Raceway’s 3.1 mile Donnybrooke course. While Scott Stall entered the weekend with a 253 point lead in the championship, the weekend still revealed plenty of surprises in all classes.

Sam Miller swept the three Ninja 250 sprints, narrowly beating the motorcycle centipede consisting of Bryan Lachmiller, Brad Kreller, William Miller, Corey Robinson, and Adam Knauer. As they had all year, the group spent the whole weekend racing wheel to wheel, finishing every race within seconds of each other. After a season of battling each other for class wins, Bob Barton and Trevor Treviranus split the Ultralight sprints, giving Barton the class championship and both riders their first top 10 number plates.

Christian Schmidt’s last weekend with the #1 plate looked to be business as usual, as he handily won the Lightweight GP sprint on his Yamaha R5 GP bike, and battled class rival Jon Champ to narrowly take the Lightweight Supersport win. However, Justin Gustofson’s Kawasaki Ninja 650 Superbike looked to foil Schmidt’s sweep in the Lightweight Superbike sprint, with Jon Champ and Kyle Knutson joineing Schmidt and Gustofson at the head of the pack in what was the battle of the weekend. Heads up riding by Gustofson took the win over the pack of Suzuki SV650’s, and Schmidt had to make last lap passes to take second place, with the four riders crossing the line within 0.7 seconds of each other. Paul Satterlee, Chris Mattson, and David Burke led the Novice Lightweight pack.

The Michelin Middleweight sprints saw Scott Stall and Kyle Ohnsorg split wins, with Ohnsorg taking the Supersport and Superbike sprints. Stall took the GP middleweight win, as well as the Heavyweight GP and Superbike wins. Veteran Aaron Anderson’s Suzuki GSX-R750 was at the front of the Heavyweight packs, and took the Supersport class victory. After dominant performances in July and August, Novice favorite Tom Austin could only chase Justin Craine, who won every novice Michelin Middleweight and Heavyweight sprint of the weekend, as well as the 2015 new rider championship.

The Worldwide Machining and Welding Unlimited sprints saw Bell Helmets rider Shane Keaveny take the Supersport win over Aaron Anderson, and Kyle Ohnsorg shocked the paddock on his Husman Racing BMW S1000RR when he not only took a win in his first Brainerd race on the bike, but also set the Donnybrooke course lap record with a time of 1:40.481 in the Superbike sprint. Ohnsorg also won the GP sprint against class frontrunners Stall and Keaveny.

Sunday’s 5 hour endurance featured 21 teams in the GP1, GP2, GP3, and GP4 categories. Team Worldwide was the favorite for the overall win, but an engine failure during practice had the team scramble before the start of the race. Quick work saw the team make the start with their Yamaha YZF-R6 and take the early lead. But a late race front tire change handed the overall lead to the YZF-R6 of team Drew and Friends. Worldwide rider Scott Stall made a late race charge to catch Drew and Friends, pulling laps in the 1:43’s to close the gap by half a minute, but Drew and Friends held on to the lead and took the overall win. Team Destroked Jamokes rode their GP2 Yamaha R5 to the overall third place, followed by the Honda CBR1000RR GP4 team Racing Incidence.

Despite missing the overall endurance win, Scott Stall came away with his first overall club championship. In a season where Stall took many wins and set track records, team owner John Anderson pointed out his maturity and consistency as his biggest strides of the season. Stall was quick to thank his team and sponsors: “Team Worldwide put in a huge effort to help me win this championship. Thanks to Anderson Racing, Pirelli, Bell Helmets, VP, Carillo, KWS, Maxima Oils and Vortex for all of the support this season.”

The club will hold their season closing award banquet on November 14 at Sundance Event Center in Maple Grove, Minnesota. See www.cra-mn.com for more details.
