Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix Daily Update – July 24, 2012 A Place for Everything and Everything in its Place Logistics are Key For the hundreds of workers and volunteers at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca it is crunch time. There are just two days to get the final small pieces in place for this week’s Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix. For the professional race staff of Dorna, the sanctioning body for MotoGP™, the majority of their set up is complete and they are ready for a successful race. Dorna shipped 208 tons of freight aboard two chartered 747 airplanes from their last race in Italy to San Francisco. The freight, which includes television broadcasting equipment, on-track signage, air fences, safety cars and all team equipment including the riders’ motorcycles, then made the journey down the California coast to Monterey in 30 escorted trailers. In just two days it was unpacked and put into place. Carles Jorba, operations director, and Robert Berenguer, logistics manager, for Dorna oversee the monumental task of moving all this vital equipment from race to race, 18 in all, and throughout a total of 13 countries. “Our time in the U.S. is one of the best moments on the calendar,” says Berenguer. “Monterey is beautiful, we don’t often get it so good, and the people here are so nice.” At the conclusion of the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, Berenguer and the Dorna logistics staff will again pack up their equipment and escort the freight across the United States to the next race in Indianapolis. Now, the remainder of the details are left to the skilled IT technicians, carpenters, electricians and their staff. Miles of cable, tons of lumber, huge platforms and enormous tent structures are being built nearly around the clock to accommodate teams, sponsors, exhibitors and race fans. When the first fan enters the facility on Friday, there will be an amazing infrastructure in place to match the remarkable MotoGP™ racing on track. Be sure to check in and stay tuned as the MotoGP™ buzz continues to build on the Monterey Peninsula.
