Donington Park is the scene of the third round of thrilling Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. Situated in the centre of England the 4.023km (2.500 mile) track provides the Rookies with a new combination of challenges and will really test what they have learnt from the races in Jerez and Mugello. The lessons gained from Mugello’s undulations and changes of camber will be extremely valuable in avoiding disaster on the drop down Craner curves, the first left hander away from the start. Unwary newcomers are often caught out having the front end slide away from them there. The flowing nature of the circuit is interrupted by the last section where a tight left and right ‘S’ off the back straight leads to a right and then a left hand hairpin. The final corner is not that different from the left hand final hairpin at Jerez and similarly so often the scene of last lap drama. It should be the biggest grid so far for the Rookies Cup as injured riders Kevin Sanchez and Deane Brown are both due to be fit making a field of 23. Heading them is championship leader Lorenzo Savadori, the fourteen year-old Italian scored a win and a second place in the first two races to give him just a four point advantage over Johann Zarco. The sixteen year-old Frenchman was third in Jerez but won in Mugello and has every intention of snatching the Leader Helmet and Leader Shirt from Savadori at Donington. There is little chance of those two having the race to themselves for many others have already shown themselves more than capable of battling for the race win. The most obvious challenger is Cameron Beaubier. The American turned fifteen on the 12th of June and battled for the lead in both Jerez and Mugello before off track excursions ended his challenge. Then there are those with the advantage of racing at home, or near to it. Jamie Mossey, Matthew Hoyle and Stuart Mitchell, are on home soil while Deane Brown and Adam Blacklock carry the Scottish flag south of the border to where their fellow countryman Niall Mackenzie had so much great success before them. If the Rookies need any inspiration for the challenges of Donington they should think of Red Bull’s first ever Grand Prix win, Simon Crafar’s classic victory over World Champion Mick Doohan in the 1998 British Grand Prix on the Red Bull Yamaha.
