All Eyes Turn to Monterey September 27-29 for eni FIM Superbike World Championship Advance Ticket Sales Ends Monday, September 23 MONTEREY, Calif., Sept. 20, 2013 – The battle for who will be crowned World Champion heats up next week in Monterey as riders prepare for their first visit to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the eni FIM Superbike World Championship, U.S. Round September 27-29. Fresh off his two race wins in Turkey, Aprilia Team rider Eugene Laverty (Ireland) has moved into third place in the overall standings and is looking to potentially move into second place. Laverty is 18 points behind fellow Aprilia Team rider Sylvain Guintoli (France). Sitting atop the standings with a slim 8 point lead is Kawasaki Team rider Tom Sykes (England) whose last win came earlier this month at Nurburgring, Germany. Chasing the Manufacturers title, Aprilia has a 42 point stranglehold on the lead over second place Kawasaki, which is in a close battle with BMW, clinging to a 23 point margin. With just three races left, the chase is coming right down to the wire. “The Superbike World Championship provides thrilling race action with full grids and extremely competitive racing. Being the riders’ first time at this circuit, it will be interesting to watch them challenge such a technical track that is highlighted by our iconic Corkscrew,” says Gill Campbell, CEO/general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This year, World Superbike competes in 11 countries with 14 races and the Monterey visit is the only one held in the United States. Each round has two races and the results of each race are combined to determine two annual World Championships, one for riders and one for manufacturers.
