Davis Dominates AHRMA Vintage Cup Series at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway

(Elora, Tennessee) Back-to-back wins put Jesse Davis closer to the championship points lead in the 2022 American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) Vintage Cup.

His two victories were during rounds 21 and 22 of the Bridgestone Tires AHRMA National Historic Cup Roadracing Series at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway, Munford, Alabama, October 1 and 2.

The 2022 Vintage Cup, sponsored by RoadracingWorld.com, features the Vintage Superbike Heavyweight class.  Davis, from Long Beach, California, won both rounds on his 1982 Yamaha XV920R.

On Saturday, Davis got the holeshot and held the lead until the checkered flag.  Kevin Rammer, on his 1982 Honda CB650SC from Newnan, Georgia, took second, with Andre Hauer of Houston, Texas riding his 1981 Kawasaki GPZ550, rounding out the podium.  Barry Hasenkopf, on a 1982 Kawasaki KZ1000, from Lawrenceville, Georgia was fourth, with Warren Wilson riding his 1982 Kawasaki GPZ750, hailing from Indianapolis, Indiana fifth.

In a repeat of Saturday’s performance, Davis once again took the lead from the start which he held until the checkered flag.  Rammer took second, and Wilson completed the podium, coming in third.

Current series leader, Jeremy Maddrill of Steger, Illinois, was at the event; however, he didn’t ride this class.  Look for him to take to the track next weekend as AHRMA’s season draws to a close at the 17th Barber Vintage Festival. Maddrill leads by just over 1,000 points and with Davis pushing hard, it’s Maddrill’s championship to lose.

The AHRMA Vintage Superbike Heavyweight class is for motorcycles produced through 1982 with unlimited displacement for twin-cylinder motors and three-cylinder motors with “pushrod” valves. Four-cylinder machines are limited to either 931 or 1,025 cc’s depending on the model.  For 2022, the class is sponsored by the International CBX Owners Association.

Vintage Superbike Heavyweight recreates and preserves the look and feel of this important era of road racing and to showcases these unique machines. Superbikes of that era were based street-legal models available for sale at any motorcycle dealership.  Most lacked the streamlined bodywork, low, clip-on style handlebars and rear-set foot pegs of purpose-built Gran Prix motorcycles.  Instead, riders sat almost upright on the machines. Wider handlebars gave the racer the leverage needed to wrestle the large bikes around a racing circuit.
