It was Cameron’s fourth victory out of the past five races aboard his #6 Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha YZF-R6. Cameron’s teammate Tommy Hayden was also in the lead pack and very much in contention for the win. The eldest Hayden brother, who won last year’s SuperBike race at Laguna Seca, finished a close third today and earned his fifth podium of the season After his victory, Cameron said, “I was trying to be patient during the race, but I wanted so bad to lead it! On the last lap, I tried to go around the outside in turn one, and that got me set up to make an inside pass in turn two. That pass stuck, and I brought it home for the win. It’s been a tricky weekend for us here at Laguna Seca, with not as much track time as I’d like. My entire crew worked hard, and I’m really glad to get the win for them.” Even though Cameron missed some races earlier in the season due to injury, he has now moved up another notch in the Daytona SportBike Championship points standings and shares third place with Tommy. After a well-earned summer break, the Y.E.S./Graves/Yamaha team will travel coast to coast for the next GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing round on September 7 through 9 at New Jersey Motorsports Park. More, from a press release issued by Geiger Media on behalf of GEICO: Runner-up finish in Laguna Seca yields huge points gain for Cardenas MONTEREY, Calif. (July 29) — The disappointment of getting passed on the last lap and settling for runner-up honors at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix quickly was replaced by jubilation throughout the GEICO Suzuki pit when the new championship rankings showed rider Martin Cardenas ahead of his nearest rival by a whopping 64 points. Cardenas entered the weekend 40 points ahead of second-place Dane Westby in the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike class, but after earning the pole, leading the most laps in the main event, and finishing second — combined with Westby’s shocking first-lap crash that eventually relegated him to 18th place — Cardenas came out the big winner on the day. “Of course, we wanted the win,” Cardenas said. “This is why we race, to win. But second place is a good result and now that I find out what happened to Dane and see the new points structure, we have obviously made a great gain today.” The rankings now show Cardenas 64 points ahead of Westby and 80 clear of both Cameron Beaubier and Tommy Hayden, who are tied for third. Cardenas got the holeshot in Sunday’s race and was never really challenged until Beaubier made his move at the start of the final circuit around the 11-turn, 2.23-mile track. Beaubier went on to win, followed by Cardenas and Hayden. “Cameron made a good move to pass me,” Cardenas admitted. “I was expecting him to try something in Turn 5 and I had an idea of how to shut the door, but he surprised me in Turn 1 and made the pass. I wanted to try to get back around him because I felt the race was ours, but I also didn’t want to give anything more away. He had just enough cushion that he was able to hold the position. Aside from that, it was a perfect race for us and we are happy.” With just three stops and six races left on the GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing schedule, Cardenas says he has no plans of playing it safe to defend his No. 1 ranking moving forward. “This isn’t how we race,” said Cardenas, a six-time winner this season. “We try to win every event for our sponsors and our team. It is important to not ride defensively. Why should we change what has worked so well for us all year? “I’m ready for the next race. I’m excited to continue.” The Devil’s Showdown takes place Sept. 7-9 at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, N.J. The AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike class will race twice at the event. More, from a press release issued by LTD Racing: TOUGH DAY FOR NASH IN SHORT LAGUNA SECA WEEKEND Monterey, CA (July, 29, 2012) LTD Racing’s Huntley Nash soldiered to a 16th place finish in the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike race at Laguna Seca. Nash, in the middle of a season where he’s progressed a great deal in his quest to become a DSB front-runner after winning races in the SuperSport class, got very little track time due to scheduling issues, red flags, and fog in California. Due to the lack of track time, the young racer was left to make a gamble on tires for the race. After the race, Nash wasn’t happy with his choice. “We didn’t get any track time, basically, after we made some changes on Friday. In the warm-up, we had a limited time to check things out,” said Huntley. “The bike didn’t really feel that welcoming to me, but I figured it was possibly because we had a tire with some laps on it on the bike, and the conditions were not the best. We decided to use the medium tire for the race after running the soft all weekend.” Nash tried to make ground early in the race, but he wasn’t able to catch onto the leading group. He persevered to do the best he could in the 20-lap race. “During that race, I have never been so sideways in my life. The front was fine but the rear was not. I felt like I was a superhero doing 1:30s, and the riders around me got an entertaining show. The weekend was tough but that’s the way it goes,” said Nash. “We’re looking forward to the next one.” Nash and LTD Racing return to action at New Jersey Motorsports Park September 7-9.
