JD Beach Finishes A Close Second Aboard His Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha R6 In AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Race 1 At Barber Motorsports Park
Birmingham, AL – June 21, 2014 – On a busy Saturday of qualifying and racing in the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike class, the Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team had a good news/bad news outcome at Barber Motorsports.
First, the good news. After qualifying seventh on the grid earlier in the day, JD Beach, rider of the #6 Yamaha YZF-R6, finished second to Yamalube/Westby Racing’s Dane Westby in DSB Race 1, which is JD’s best result yet since joining the team at the beginning of the 2014 season. It was also Dane’s first win aboard his #00 Yamaha R6.
After the race, JD said, “It seems like Dane and I keep finding each other out there. Dane’s a great rider, and we had a really good battle. It was great to be out front. It was a really hot race, but an exciting one, and I’m happy with the result.”
JD’s teammate Garrett Gerloff got his weekend off to a great start in qualifying, as he put his #8 R6 on the front row of the grid. Garrett was also in the lead in DSB Race 1 when the race was red-flagged. After restarting from the pole, Garrett and RoadRace Factory/Yamaha rider Jake Gagne both went down, and Garrett unfortunately suffered a hairline fracture of his left radius (wrist).
“I’m upset that my day, and weekend, ended early, especially when I was up front and had a chance for the win. I’m also upset that I injured myself and can’t race tomorrow, but I’m determined to get back on the bike as soon as I can.”

Zemke earns seventh-place finish; Ulrich crashes out in Day 1 action at Barber
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (June 21) — A hot day at Barber Motorsports Park produced only lukewarm results for the GEICO Honda Motorcycle team with rider Jake Zemke finishing in the second pack of Daytona SportBike riders in seventh place. In Superbike action, Chris Ulrich finished his day in the medical center after crashing hard on lap seven. Ulrich had a gash on his arm that required stitches but was otherwise unhurt.
“We qualified 12th today, which was not where we wanted to start,” Zemke said. “It’s frustrating because the guys have been working really hard to squeeze more power out of my bike since the last race. We qualified with one setup and used a different one for the race that I was much happier with but still didn’t get the results we wanted. We were able to finish seventh and even battled for fifth there for a little while, so we have some things to look forward to in tomorrow’s race.”
Zemke and other riders realized that the reduced two-day schedule, versus the traditional three-day slate, changed the parameters of what his championship-winning team can do between sessions.
“We definitely had a little less setup time today, which was different for all of us,” Zemke said. “For me personally, I’ve been around so long and started with so many different schedules that I made it work. I come from a dirt track background where they do everything in one day, so it wasn’t that bad.
“It is hard on the guys that maybe do not train in the heat like today and it is especially hard for the bikes, but I understand the series needs to make this change for the teams and the fans.”
A malfunction with his bike was the culprit in Ulrich’s crash. The veteran rider reported that his 1,000cc machine dropped into neutral as he traversed the course, causing him to come off the machine and crash into a retaining wall for the first time in his career.
“We actually made a lot of progress today,” Ulrich said. “Unfortunately, I was coming into lap seven and caught a neutral between third and fourth gear on a downshift. I was pretty frantic trying to get it back into gear because you are going pretty fast around that turn. I realized I wasn’t going to save it and saw the wall coming pretty fast, so I slid out.
“I got a little gash on my arm that required a few stitches but am OK overall. The medical team was great and I thank them. I’ll need to assess where I am physically in the morning to see if I can race and then I’ll need to get cleared by the doctors. I think that’s what will happen because I am hoping for a very strong race tomorrow.”
Both Zemke and Ulrich will try again Sunday during the second races of the Triumph Double Header. SportBike kicks off at 2 p.m. and Superbike at 3 p.m. Live coverage can be seen at FansChoice.TV.

Wyman finishes 11th in DSB race one, qualifies on front row for Harley-Davidson race
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (June 21) — Kyle Wyman finished a hard-earned 11th place in today’s AMA Pro Daytona Sportbike race, improving from his 15th place grid spot. The field battled scorching heat over a shortened 17-lap dash.
“That was one of the hardest races I’ve ever ridden,” Wyman said. “It was really a survival of the fittest. We are getting closer on the setup of my Yamaha R6 and have some changes in our back pocket to try tomorrow morning. I think we will be able to bridge the gap to the group running ahead of us.”
Wyman wasn’t finished riding after the exhausting Daytona Sportbike race. He changed leathers and climbed onto his Millennium Technologies Harley-Davidson XR1200, coming away with the third-fastest time of the session and putting him on the provisional front row.
“I’ve found more and more comfort over the past few weekends with the Nitron suspension,” Wyman added. “Lenny Albin has been working hard on our new components and we still haven’t tapped the full potential of the forks or the shocks. I’m confident for the upcoming race tomorrow and will be doing everything I can do get my mind and body in shape for a long day.”

EARLY EXIT FOR ROBERTS IN ALABAMA
Team Hammer endured a difficult day at the track on Saturday, as the 2014 AMA Pro Road Racing season resumed at a blisteringly hot and humid Barber Motorsports Park.
M4 SportbikeTrackGear.com Racing’s Joe Roberts made his stunning AMA Pro debut at the circuit one year ago, claiming the double victory in his first professional race weekend. Unfortunately, his return visit would not prove as kind.
Still feeling the effects of a broken hand that forced him to pull out of the Road America round prematurely three weeks ago, Roberts qualified his CBR600RR on the outside of Row 6. He clocked the 18th best time of the day at 1:30.403.
The 17-year-old was then caught out by the weekend’s compact, two-day schedule and missed the sighting lap, which forced him to start from the back of the grid.
Roberts’ raced his way from outside the top twenty up to 13th by lap six but his day ended on the very next lap when he lost the front.
Team Hammer Crew Chief Keith Perry said, “Everything was so bang, bang, bang, today, he just lost track of time. He just wasn’t here when it was time to go.
“We missed the sighting lap so we ended up having to grid at the back. And then he was coming around the long right-hander and touching the brakes trying to pull his line and he got into one of the seams and lost the front. That was it.”
Roberts and Team Hammer will look for redemption in the second half of the weekend doubleheader on Sunday.

YAMALUBE/WESTBY RACING AND DANE WESTBY WIN IN ALABAMA
Birmingham, AL (June 21, 2014) — Dane Westby and Yamalube/Westby Racing earned victory at Barber Motorsports Park on Saturday, outlasting JD Beach and the rest of the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike field in the Alabama heat. The fantastic conquest served notice that the Oklahoman and his new Yamalube-sponsored team are up to the challenge of taking on the finest middleweight racers and teams in America by winning in just the team’s third AMA Pro event.
Westby took advantage in the chaos after an early race restart to take the lead. He then consolidated the position and withstood the assault of fellow Yamalube-sponsored pilot Beach throughout the middle portions of the race. Westby’s rival made a pass at Charlotte’s Web with four laps to go, but Dane quickly countered at Museum Turn to regain the lead.
Westby held the spot to win by 0.320 seconds. It was his third career AMA Pro Daytona SportBike victory but his first since founding his new team.
“I was able to take advantage of the red flag. I knew the guys were off track, off the line, and there was a little bit of confusion. You just have to keep going until they throw that flag and it ended up working in my favor,” said the Broaster Chicken-backed racer. “The last couple of laps, I saw one guy go flying past, and I knew they were going to try to do something, so I just tried to attack back as quick as I could.”
“It’s so ridiculously hot — the humidity,” said Westby. “I was dying in the truck before this race, but we come out and there’s no one in front of you… that stuff just disappears. It’s been almost 20 months since I stepped on a podium before last race, so I’d really like to thank the Yamalube team and my dad and Arai and Taichi and all my guys who helped me make this happen. It’s been a long time coming.”
Everyone has functioned so well, and it feels like we’ve been together for years,” said Team Manager Chuck Giacchetto. “This is pretty much a home race for us, and I am really proud of the guys. It is really sweet to win a battle at the front. Dane seems like he is maturing even more every weekend, and he ran a great race today.”
