Cameron started from the pole and got a good jump when the light turned green. He was almost immediately in a battle for the lead, which he secured before the end of lap one. It was a position that Cameron would not relinquish for the entirety of the race, as he led all of the 13 laps in the contest, ultimately taking the checkered flag with a gap of nearly 2.7 seconds over the second-place finisher. “I got a decent start, and I was trying to save my tires a little bit in the beginning,” Cameron said after the win. “But those guys behind me were racing hard, so I had to pick up the pace. I’m really happy with the win today, and I’m going to go back and try to win it again tomorrow.” Cameron’s teammate and rider of the #8 Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha R6 ran an exciting race, which was his first-ever at Road America. He got the best of his competitors at the checkers to take a well-earned 5th, making it an all-Yamaha R6 sweep for the top-five finishers Daytona SportBike Race 2 from Road America is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 PM CST. More, from a press release issued by GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing: In return from injury, Westby finishes eighth at Road America ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (June 1) – In his first GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing Series contest in eight months, GEICO Motorcycle Honda rider Dane Westby finished eighth in Saturday’s GoPro Daytona SportBike event during the Subway Superbike Doubleheader at Road America. Westby’s last race was the 2012 season finale last October in New Orleans. He missed the season opener in Daytona recovering from an injury suffered during practice for that event. “Today was kind of like an opener for me after so long without a race,” Westby said. “Everyone else has already been able to rub elbows, ride close and get a feel for how it is. The fact I haven’t done that in several months was most likely the root of our problems today. We should have finished better.” Westby started third but said his discomfort on the bike started to display itself right from the beginning. “I didn’t get a very good start,” Westby said. “Then I overshot a few corners. It was all little stuff that would have been ironed out in Daytona if I had raced. It was kind of a hard race for us today.” Westby got plenty of practice running in the draft on the lengthy course. After a mistake that saw him go through the sand trap, Westby kept the bike upright and quickly settled into a pack of four chase riders for most of the race, which was won by Cameron Beaubier. “We were expecting to finish a little higher in the order after qualifying third,” he said. “We’ll make a few changes to the bike before tomorrow. I’ll get my head wrapped around it all too, which will help us a lot.” Westby faced a similar crisis of confidence during the first two thirds of Friday’s qualifying sessions before rebounding during the final segment to jump into a spot on the front row. “I’m expecting the same kind of turnaround I had from qualifying,” Westby said. “I think I’ll get my mojo back. We’ll just have to let it all digest and look at today’s finish as a decent position to build off of.” Westby gets a second opportunity to put the GEICO Motorcycle Honda on the podium Sunday when the GoPro Daytona SportBikes will race the back half of the Subway Superbike Doubleheader. The race gets started at 1 p.m. CDT and will be carried live on the CBS Sports Network. More, from a press release issued by LTD Racing: EARLY EXIT FOR NASH IN SUPERBIKE DEBUT Elkhart Lake WI, (June 1, 2013) — Huntley Nash’s Superbike debut at Road America lasted just half a lap as the Georgian was collected in a lap-one incident in Saturday’s AMA Pro Superbike race. Nash also did not finish the Daytona SportBike contest due to machine issues on his LTD Racing Yamaha R6, resulting in a frustrating day at one of his best tracks. Nash was hopeful for a better Sunday, however, as the Neyra Racing team made progress with the team’s Kawasaki ZX10. “Everyone was checking up early on the first lap, and I saw someone dive-bombing the entire field. He crashed and took out some people, and I got hit from behind. I’m fine. We had a huge improvement in the bike with the changes that were made, and they were all positive. In DSB, something happened with the bike, so I pulled in. This is a track where we can get a good result in DSB, but we have to get everything with the bike squared away for tomorrow.” Huntley will attempt the back-to-back races tomorrow, with Daytona SportBike beginning at 1:00 PM local time and Superbike at 3:00 PM. More, from a press release issued by Team Hammer: UPS AND DOWNS FOR M4 BROASTER CHICKEN RACING AT ROAD AMERICA Saturday provided another day of impressive effort but mixed results for Team Hammer following a pair of dramatic AMA Pro Road Racing contests at Road America. Dane Westby opened the 13-lap Daytona SportBike race from the front row after qualifying third aboard his Team Hammer-prepared GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing Honda CBR600RR. The Oklahoman made a few minor mistakes as he shook off the rust associated with not racing since last fall and eventually found himself mixed up in a four-rider fight for fifth. Westby was in contention for a top five on the final lap but was shuffled down to eighth at the checkered flag. M4 Broaster Chicken Racing’s Benny Solis had a similarly eventful SportBike race. The youngster from North Hollywood, California got away well from his third-row starting slot but lost all the ground he had taken when he went too deep into the hard-braking Turn 5 on the race’s opening lap. Solis clawed his way up several positions to move into ninth, but a shifting issue eventually forced him back down to 12th despite a sweet handling and well running machine. Solis said, “I got a really good start and was happy, but I blew the turn going into Turn 5 on the opening lap. It seemed like everyone broke just a little bit early and it caught me off guard. I made a mistake and moved my brake marker too far and off. I think I dropped to like 16th and I made my way to ninth. “But I was already struggling with a weird shifting issue that come up and when I got into ninth I wanted to push hard to catch the front group. The data shows that something funky was acting up. It was running me wide in the turns and nearly caused me to crash because it kept giving me neutrals. That made the race tough and I ended up 12th. “But for the most part the bike is handling really well and it runs really well. We just need to figure out the shifting issue. We’re looking forward to tomorrow’s race. ” M4 Broaster Chicken Racing’s Chris Ulrich was also the victim of an opening-lap melee in Turn 5 in the day’s subsequent AMA Superbike race. Despite less-than-ideal conditions that prevented most riders from improving upon their provisional qualifying times, Ulrich managed to knock a second off the best lap of his frustrating Friday. Unfortunately, those gains proved difficult to fully capitalize on as he got corralled into a multi-rider incident that saw three riders crash and still others (including Chris) forced to run off track. Ulrich returned to the fray on the team’s CBR1000RR and raced his way forward, picking off a number of riders to work his way up to 13th at the checkered flag after having previously fallen as low as 19th. MPH Racing’s Melissa Paris was a charger as well. Paris was relegated to 21st on the opening lap of the SportBike contest on her Team Hammer Contract Services Honda CBR600RR, but ultimately finished in 17th, just a few tenths removed from the top 15. The Team Hammer riders hope for cleaner races on Sunday as the Road America race weekend concludes.
