Two-time AMA Pro National Guard Superbike Champion Josh Hayes and GoPro Daytona SportBike Championship leader Martin Cardenas both gave positive reviews of NOLA Motorsports Park after their initial outings on the new 2.75-mile, 16-turn road course Tuesday morning. “It’s good,” said Cardenas, who rode his GEICO Suzuki GSX-R600. “There are maybe one or two tricky corners that are difficult to get right, so I like that. And it is fast. The surface is destroying the tires very quickly, in maybe four or five laps, but so far I like it.” “It’s got some cool stuff and some scary stuff,” said Hayes, who rode his Monster Energy Graves Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike. “It’s definitely fast and very wide. All in all, I think it’s pretty cool. But we definitely need to get some rubber down. After just nine laps my front and rear tires were destroyed. “But that’s the same thing we went through when we first went to Miller and Barber and every other new track, because new track surfaces are really abrasive and just kill tires. It could be an issue when we come back here for the race, because it’s still early [in the track’s life]. Hopefully, a lot of stuff happens on the track before we come back. And we’ll see how it does over these two days with the rubber we put down.” Asked what was scary about the track, Hayes said, “Going into the fast esses in the back, there are a few waves at the entrance and I’m going in there in fifth gear. And with the front tearing up there’s a real vague feeling going in there.”
