FIRST PERSON/OPINION Via e-mail: Today, I learned that my good friend Dennis Ergo has had a stroke. About a year ago I received a call from Dennis Ergo wanting some coaching work. So, we met up at Jennings GP and I expected to see a young rider ready to learn. Well, a 56-year-old man steps out of his trailer and I said, “Is Dennis around?” The man replied, “I am Dennis.” I thought to myself, “This is pretty cool.” So my first question was, “What are your goals in racing?” He replied, “I want to make the AMA SuperSport grid at Barber and Mid Ohio.” Let’s get to work! After the weekend was over, I was impressed with his riding. Even though his body was 56, he has the mind of a 25-year-old. He asked me, “When can we get together again?” I replied. “Anytime you want.” So, we ended up at Barber three weekends and he took the DiSavlo Speed Academy. He was ready to take on the AMA SuperSport class at Barber. I will never forget the call from Dennis after qualifying, “Hey, Brian I made the grid!” Dennis sounded like he had just won the lottery! It brought tears to my eyes and happiness for Dennis. That weekend he finished 20th in the first race and 25th in the second. Dennis kept working hard for the race at Mid-Ohio. He again made the grid and finished 24th in the first race and 20th in the second race. Dennis has a never-quit attitude, so I fully expect him to walk out of that hospital and head straight back to the track. Get well soon, buddy! Keep him in your prayers.
