Riders to compete for AMA No. 1 plates at 2017 AMA Road Race Grand Championship

Registration for event closes Oct. 29

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — America’s fastest amateur road racers will compete to be crowned AMA National Champions at Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, Ala., Nov. 2-5, as WERA Motorcycle Roadracing hosts the 2017 AMA Road Race Grand Championship.

“The AMA is excited to be partnering with WERA to host the 2017 AMA Road Race Grand Championship at Barber Motorsports Park,” AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant said. “Our long partnership with WERA has created a strong foundation that allows us to put on top-quality road racing events for our members, and this year’s AMA Road Race Grand Championship will be action packed.”

Registration is open until Oct. 29 at www.wera.com to all riders with a current road racing license from any AMA-recognized organization. Class rules for the event will be based on the current WERA Rulebook available at www.wera.com

Up for grabs in AMA Road Race Grand Championship classes is the Nicky Hayden AMA Horizon Award, which recognizes one rider who is best prepared for the professional ranks, based on attitude, enthusiasm and performances as an amateur.

The award was renamed in honor of 2002 AMA Superbike Champion and 2006 FIM MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden, who passed away in May and who was the inaugural winner of the AMA Horizon Award in 1997.

“Having the AMA Road Race Grand Championship coming to the WERA 45th Grand National Finals is special, but for us, the most special part is that this will be the first time the Nicky Hayden AMA Horizon Award will be presented to a future star in our sport, and it means so much to everyone at WERA Motorcycle Roadracing,” WERA owner Evelyne Clarke said. “We remember seeing Nicky and the family at WERA events many years ago, so it just seems fitting for the award to be handed out at this event.”
