Officials from racetracks and race promoters currently involved in the AMA Superbike Series met with delegations from AMA Pro Racing (DMG) and the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) Friday at Infineon Raceway to discuss 2009 racing plans. The race promoters that make up the Road Race Industry Council (RRIC) first met with DMG’s Roger Edmondson and David Atlas, then met with MIC’s Tim Buche, then asked to meet with the DMG delegation again. The meetings were hosted at the Sonoma, California track by Infineon Raceway President Steve Page during a combined IRL/Grand-Am car race weekend. Page and group organizer Alan Wilson declined to comment on the meetings when contacted by Roadracingworld.com through Infineon Raceway’s PR department (Page) and directly (Wilson). Edmondson also declined to comment on the meetings when reached by phone. Also present at the meetings were Gill Campbell of Laguna Seca; George Bruggenthies of Road America; Geoff Lee of Road Atlanta; and M1 Entertainment’s I-San Hung. According to meeting participants who spoke on the condition that they not be named because they agreed not to comment, the promoters were unimpressed by the MIC’s lack of a specific organizational plan to promote a rival series, an idea being spearheaded by American Honda’s Ray Blank and American Suzuki’s Mel Harris. “There won’t be an MIC Series,” said one racetrack representative. The promoters responded favorably to DMG’s offer to replace lost sponsorship should Honda and Suzuki refuse to sponsor AMA Superbike races and involved racetracks in 2009 and beyond, the sources said. Ironically, American Honda is currently in the middle of a multi-year sponsorship agreement with Daytona International Speedway, home of DMG. DMG offered the promoters three-year race sanctioning deals, the sources said. Meanwhile, DMG plans to increase the deployment of soft barriers in 2009 and to continue to work with a rider safety committee, according to Edmondson, who met with former racer Vincent Haskovec Saturday afternoon at Infineon Raceway. Haskovec was injured at the track in 2005.
