Defending AMA Superbike Champion Spies started from pole position and got the holeshot in the 14-lap race, then proceeded to lead all the laps to take the victory. This marks the two-time AMA Superbike Champion’s 23rd career AMA Superbike victory and also his 19th career pole position in the class. Rockstar Makita Suzuki teammate and six-time AMA Superbike Champion Mladin was right there with Spies off the line and had slotted in behind him, when he lost the front end and crashed on the second lap. Mladin was uninjured but his bike was in no shape to finish the race. Rockstar Makita Suzuki Factory Racing’s Tommy Hayden is recovering from injuries sustained at a recent round of AMA Superbike and did not race this weekend. Ben Spies: “I knew it would be a tough weekend but it’s gone pretty good for us all the way up to the race. Today, we got a good start on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000 and just tried to put in as many good laps as possible. I heard something behind me and then I realized Mat wasn’t there and that helped us get a good gap on the rest of the field. Then I made a small mistake, but luckily we had that gap and could get the race win today, as well as the points lead. Everything that happened in the race today really worked out for us. I don’t wish anything bad on Mat but we’ve gotten a lot of points out of this race and now we’re just looking forward to a good race tomorrow.” Mat Mladin: “The race started off pretty good. I was right there with Ben and I thought we were going to have a good race, and then I lost the front end and was off in the dirt. I got up and there was dirt all in my helmet and I went over to the bike and realized I wasn’t going to be riding that any time soon. But we have another race tomorrow and we’ll be back to give it another go.” More, from a press release issued by Kawasaki: Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Hacking Comes Back for Season-Best Finish Tooele, Utah (May 31, 2008) Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jamie Hacking battled back to finish a season-best second during Saturday’s AMA Superbike race at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. His ride through the pack electrified fans as he finished only 1.6 seconds behind the winner. Kawasaki Under the Kawasaki Tent Man on a Mission Hacking got off to a great start, settling into third in the first turn. A miscalculation in one of the turns during lap two sent him off the track, but he was able to keep the bike up and came back on the track in 11th. With 13 laps to go, Hacking put in several inspired laps, and by lap 10 had moved into second. Not willing to settle for second, Hacking continued to gain on the leader to finish only 1.6 seconds out of first. Race Pace Hacking’s pace the whole weekend has turned heads and has people recognizing the capability of the powerful Kawasaki ZX™-10R. The track, which has a front straight that is just over a half mile long, provides the perfect characteristics to show off the speed and power of this all-new motorcycle. Hydration The hump in the riders suit may be a mystery to many, but for Hacking, it serves several purposes. Not only can it be hooked up to a mini fan for cooling after a long race, but it can also house a hydration system that can be connected to his helmet.
