TIE, MOSSEY/SEBESTYEN, 7 points More, from a press release issued by Red Bull: Cameron´s brilliant last lap victory! First victory for an American Rookie. Cameron Beaubier (USA) followed by Johann Zarco (FRA) and then Gull – Reiterberger Savadori in between six tenth of a second. Three German Rookies top ten at their home race: Reiterberger 4., Kartheininger 7.,Glöckner 9.! Overall: Savadori leading by 2 points ahead of Zarco. American Cameron Beaubier stole victory from Frenchman Johann Zarco at the second to last corner after shadowing the Frenchman for the entire 18 laps of Sachsenring. Third man home in the fifth round of the eight race Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup was Swede Robert Gull who did a fantastic job to hold off German Markus Reiterberger and championship leader Lorenzo Savadori of Italy. Beaubier rode a perfectly judged race and overcame a rival who he admitted was virtually his equal. “He was quicker than me in the first section of the track so I knew that the only chance I had was in the last few corners. I had to really work at it to get on his tail, slipstreaming him down the hill I just hoped that I could get close enough to make a pass… and it worked out.” Zarco was not happy to come out second. “I race to win, I can’t be happy with that,” was his immediate reaction. After the podium ceremony he had thought better, “Second at least gives me the points to close the gap on Lorenzo so that’s good and it was a great race. I knew that Cameron would try something and when he did I thought I could get him back at the last corner. I tried and I almost had the chance to catch him but he protected the fast line, he played it well.” Like the lead duo Gull was sweating heavily at the end of a hot race and happy to be third. “I was only tenth on the grid but got a great start and managed to get into third. I had to fight them off all the way because I knew that if they got ahead of me they would go away. At the last corner Markus tried to pass and he almost got me because my rear slid out and I lost the drive. I stood up on the footrests and just pushed the nose across the line.” Fifth man home was Lorenzo, not happy with the result but knowing that he still had the Championship lead though only by two points. “The bike just did not seem to accelerate that well today so I had to work hard just to hang on to the other guys and get fifth.” In Beautiful sunshine it was local hero Reiterberger who shot off the line first but Zarco stole the lead up the inside going into the first corner. A corner later American Kris Turner was in the dirt and after a few more Spain’s Luis Salom crash out of sixth. End of lap one and it was Zarco from Beaubier and Reiterberger. Then Gull moved into third ahead of a four man battle while Britain’s Stuart Mitchell crashed on lap two at high speed. Starting the second lap Beaubier looked over his shoulder to see a two second gap to Gull, Trabalon, Reiterberger and Savadori. German Lucy Gloeckner had a moment of drama and went from eight to eighteenth and lost twenty seconds while Carrillo and Fagerhaug crashed on lap 4. Onto lap 5 the leading duo had a three second advantage. Back in the pack Americans JD Beach and Turner were trying to make up ground from 16th and 17th respectively. With the leading pair lapping half a second quicker than their pursuers but a second slower than Zarco’s pole time there was a question of who had what up their sleeve for the last laps. Gull continued to hold the advantage in third leading Trabalon, Reiterberger and Savadori. Kartheininger lay seventh half a second ahead of Hoyle with the next man Cholbi twelve seconds adrift of him and leading a five man battle for ninth. Trabalon was in the dirt with a mechanical problem on lap nine leaving three men to contest third. Kartheininger slid off at turn one on lap ten, lost 17 seconds and rejoined 7th, four and a half seconds ahead of Sembera. In the second half of the race Gloeckner started to lap well quicker than those around her and by the end of lap twelve had charged through to twelfth. She finally finished ninth. Five laps to go and the battle for the lead was almost side by side across the line. The battle for third between Gull and Reiterberger was just as hot with Savadori watching just half a second behind. The last lap and Beaubier was right on Zarco’s tail, he chased him and went inside into the fast sweeper at the bottom of the long hill at the second to last corner. Zarco had a good look at passing him back at the final turn but Beaubier kept his head and the lead. Gull held of an equally determined attack from Reiterberger at the last corner to take the final podium place.
