Daniels Sweeps Wild Springfield ST Doubleheader

 

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (September 4, 2021) – Reigning AFT Singles champion Dallas Daniels (No. 1 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) rebounded following his recent catastrophic Peoria TT outing, doubling up at the Springfield Short Track Doubleheader in improbable fashion on Friday night in Springfield, Illinois.

It wasn’t as simple as a standard sweep of the checkered flags at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, however, as Daniels was faced with back-to-back disasters before ultimately walking away with a redemptive double win to successfully reignite his title defense in front of the home fans.

Main Event 1

A little earlier in the evening it looked as if Trevor Brunner (No. 21 American Honda/Progressive Insurance CRF450R) had returned to the scene of his maiden victory and added a second to his career tally, albeit in controversial fashion.

With less than two minutes remaining on the clock of the opening Main Event, Brunner and fellow ‘20 Springfield Short Track winner Daniels broke free from Daniels’ teammate, Mikey Rush (No. 15 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F), and fast qualifier Kody Kopp (No. 143 Smartop/Jones Honda/Latus Motors CRF450R), to engage in a two-rider duel for the win.

Daniels showed Brunner a wheel twice before finally executing what felt like the race’s decisive maneuver with the clock near expiration and just two brief laps remaining to seal a timely win.

Brunner had other plans, barging up the inside in the race’s final corner. The resulting contact sent Daniels tumbling to the dirt, which brought out a late red and left Daniels’ title hopes in serious jeopardy.

After initially being recognized as the race winner, a contrite Brunner admitted, “I would never replicate that pass again. We’re all riding aggressive and we’re all riding hard, but I understand on my part that was a bad judgement call, and my deepest apologies to the whole Estenson Racing team…

“I just wanted to go for the win. Everybody out here wants to win. We’ll do what we have to do, but in some instances some moves aren’t right to make. I flirted with that line tonight, and I know it was over the line.”

After intensive review by Progressive American Flat Track officials, the final results reverted to the running order on the lap prior to the incident (the last lap completed by all active riders still on the lead lap). Daniels was therefore ultimately awarded the win. And, as Brunner was designated the sole cause of the red flag, he was dropped down to the back of the lead lap and hence credited with 11th.

The Brunner-Daniels incident elevated one-time race leader Rush to second in the final order, at last ending the veteran ace’s seven-race podium drought. It also bumped Morgen Mischler (No. 13 Mission Roof Systems KTM 450 SX-F) — who tracked down and overhauled Kopp late — to third to increase his season’s podium haul to eight.

Kopp finished fourth while Brunner’s teammate, Cole Zabala (No. 51 American Honda/Progressive Insurance CRF450R), rounded out the top five.

Title leader Max Whale (No. 18 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-FFE) came home in sixth.

Main Event 2

Main Event 2 was nearly as hectic, although Daniels largely managed to escape the crossfire in the rematch thanks to some skillful maneuvering on the tight arena.

That said, despite getting first pick as the fast qualifier, the champ was immediately dropped to fourth behind Zabala, Brunner and Kopp. Less than a chaotic minute into the race, teammates Brunner and Zabala came together while disputing the lead, this time with Zabala hitting the deck and forcing another red flag.

Brunner assumed the lead at the restart with Daniels right on his tail, while Zabala found himself having to fight his way up from the back of the field.

Daniels made a tidy and drama-free pass for the lead with just over two minutes remaining and quickly stretched out a big enough gap to prevent another last-corner surprise. However, that important work was undone by another red flag; this time when Rush crashed after being contacted by Mischler in their scrap for third as the clock hit 0:00.

This set up a three-lap shootout for victory, seemingly putting another surefire Daniels win in doubt. Those fears were instantly erased by a strong launch from the staggered restart as the bar-banging ensued enmasse just behind.

“After a weekend like Peoria… that was tough,” Daniels said. “I haven’t been in that position so far in my career, and it was a little sad because I thought we had the speed there (to win). I was definitely sore coming into here, but the team, man, they believe in me. I can’t thank the whole Estenson Racing Monster Energy Yamaha team enough. It’s just super crazy that we could rebound like this.”

Brunner held on for second, followed by fellow rising star Kopp. Zabala somehow charged his way up to fourth with Mischler close behind fifth. Perhaps even more impressive than Zabala’s race-long comeback was that of Rush, who slashed his way from last to seventh in that three-lap scramble.

Whale, meanwhile, was shuffled back from sixth to ninth over that same span. As a result, Daniels has reclaimed the title lead by seven points (231-224) with just three races left to determine the 2021 AFT Singles crown.

The Springfield Short Track Doubleheader will air on NBCSN on Sunday, September 19, at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. The broadcast will feature both Main Events as well as exclusive features and cutting-edge aerial drone and onboard footage.

Daniels Reclaims Points Lead at Springfield Short Track Doubleheader

Estenson Racing’s Dallas Daniels returned to the top, sweeping last night’s Progressive Springfield Short Track doubleheader at the Illinois State Fairgrounds to move back into the points lead in the AFT Singles Championship. His teammate Mikey Rush ended the night with a runner-up finish and an impressive seventh-place result despite an incident that put him on the ground in the final laps of the second Main Event.

It was a marathon night for the AFT Singles riders at the Illinois State Fairgrounds Arena, having to race two Semis and two Main Events on the same night for a total of 72 laps. Daniels and Rush were on par for a good outing, qualifying third and fourth, respectively. The pair also had a good result in their Semis, taking runner-up finishes to start on the front row for the first Main Event.

They both got a good start, with Rush quickly moving to the lead and the defending champion in fourth. Daniels advanced to third before the halfway point and then passed his teammate five laps later. He continued his forward charge and took over the lead just before the clock ran out. Unfortunately, on the final lap, the competition made contact with him in Turn 3, putting him on the ground. After intensive review from the officials, the running order was reverted to the lap prior to the incident, and Daniels was credited with the win, with Rush right behind in second.

Daniels came out swinging in the second half of the evening and won his Semi race. After the start of the second Main, he quickly moved to third. The red flag came out three laps into the race after a rider up front went down, putting him second in the staggered restart. He made his move to the front with around two minutes remaining, and then the race was red-flagged again with seconds left on the clock after his teammate Rush went down. It was a three-lap sprint, so Daniels put his head down and went unchallenged to take his second win of the night and fourth this season. The double win at his home race was an important 27-points haul that moved the Illinois rider back to the top of the points standings, giving him a seven-point lead with three rounds remaining.

Starting from the second row of the grid, Rush had a good start inside of the top five. He was fourth after the restart and advanced to the final podium spot before the halfway mark. Unfortunately, another rider made contact with him in the final moments of the race, and the Californian went down. Starting at the back of the grid in the staggered restart, Rush put his head down and put on an impressive charge back to seventh.

The Estenson Racing team is right back at it tomorrow as they head over to the big track for some twin racing at the Springfield Mile I and II on September 4-5. Next up for the AFT Singles team is another Progressive American Flat Track doubleheader at the legendary Sacramento Mile on September 11-12.

“It was a wild night here in Springfield that ultimately ended in a good night for us with Dallas winning both Main Events and retaking the points lead. We came in here with a pretty big deficit, so it was a big turnaround in the points as the season is coming to a close. Mikey showed good speed all day and got a podium in the first race. He was in contention for another podium in the second race, but unfortunately, a rider came underneath him, and he went down. It was a staggered restart, and he was dead last with three laps to go and came all the way back to seventh. I’m proud of him for keeping on charging like that. We will now shift our focus to the last three races and end the year strong.”

“It was a bit of a crazy day at the Springfield Short Track. I really wanted to get this win after Peoria. That was a really tough weekend and it was not a fun week leading up to Springfield. We got off to a good start, had some good Semi races, and were able to win both Main Events. I’m so happy to rebound like this. It was a bit of an emotional win for myself and the team after Peoria and what we went through there, so it was definitely awesome.”
