What a car magazine labeled “Honda’s Secret Museum” started life as a warehouse about a mile and a half from American Honda headquarters in Torrance, California.
The 17,000+ square-foot building was being used by Honda’s automotive division to store assorted historically significant cars. The way Honda’s Jon Seidel tells it, when an automotive journalist was shown the collection of cars, a story followed, and the rest is history.
By 2001 the collection was organized in a walled-off space with cars on display, along with significant engines on stands and an open area set up with couches and chairs. In 2008 a mezzanine was added, displaying significant motorcycles and photos. In another section of the building—still set up as a warehouse—Honda stored a motorcycle race team bus, along with assorted racebikes and racing equipment on pallet racks.
The warehouse isn’t open to the public, but is used for special functions, including the U.S. press intro and briefing for the 2021 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade. It was during that intro that I climbed steel stairs to the mezzanine and realized that I had—at one time or another—ridden many of the bikes on display …
