Patricia Fernandez to race 1000cc and 600cc in Irish Road Races
I could not be more excited and thankful to my Magic Bullet team for purchasing a 1000 for me to race. I actually think I may have made my team owner, Stanley Watson, go deaf on the phone from screaming so loud when he told me the news. The discussion of me competing on a big bike began when we first applied to compete at Macau. The organizers of Macau told me I needed Superbike experience before I could be considered. I competed on a 1000 in Australia at Phillip Island, but since that was a circuit course and not a road race it didn’t count. I am flying over to Northern Ireland in July to race Armoy, Race of Legends, and the World’s Fastest Road Race, the Ulster GP. We are hoping that with two separate race weekends on the 1000 that we can be considered to race the Macau GP this year. If I am approved to race in China, I will be become the first ever female to race the circuit.
Most of the pro road racers compete on multiple bikes of different displacements to get the seat time. Since the roads can only be closed for a certain amount of time, when there are red flags or other occurrences that stop the on-track activities, your seat time is lost. This can make it very difficult to learn such a long course. I am happy that I get to race both the R6 and now the ZX-10 to increase my amount of seat time. I am also very thankful to my team for allowing me to build my confidence up first on the 600 before we raced the big bike on the roads. It is such an incredible feeling to ride for a team that has so much faith in you, it makes me want to ride even harder for them. I am approaching riding the 1000 with an attitude of learning and no ego. I know that I still have much to learn and at the end of the day, finishing a road race is a victory in itself. Being able to represent the USA and women on the “tele” is a wonderful feeling, I am happy that I will be able to give everyone someone to cheer for as they watch.
