Grids Grow As Racers Join the Amateur Ranks and Pros Prepare for Daytona 

The race action was at the rev limiter at round 5 of Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association’s Winter Series, held February 22-23 at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway in Desert Center, CA. The event saw a record number of entries, which included a growing number of amateur racers and plenty of AMA Pros getting in some last-minute testing before the Daytona 200 in early March.

“We’ve got over 400 entries, from 161 riders,” said CVMA Race Director Jay Tanner. “That’s compared to the 120 or 130 we usually see. There are 42 amateurs running in the Middleweight class, so that’s a clear sign of growth, and something we’re excited about.”

While new racers were cutting their teeth on Chuckwalla’s 17-turn, 2.68-mile circuit, the local fast guys and visiting AMA Pros were setting new lap records.

David “Aussie Dave” Anthony netted three wins on his MotoSport.com Suzuki GSX-R1000, and in the process turned the fastest lap ever recorded during a CVMA-sanctioned event, a scorching 1:45.685 during the Formula Open race presented by Dunlop/Jim Cox Racing.

Young gun Daytona Anderson also had a tremendously successful weekend aboard his Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6, winning five races and setting two new class records, including a 1:47.066 in Formula Middleweight presented by Attack Performance and a 1:47.275 in the CVMA Middleweight Shootout presented by TrackDaz.

“I’ve wanted to win for a long time,” said Anderson. “We got some stuff figured out with the bike and things just clicked. I had a bad year last year so this is good, and we’re happy with this weekend’s results. We’re just trying to get time on the bike.”

Although Daytona snagged all the middleweight expert wins, the fastest 600 of the weekend was the Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 of Chad Lewin. Lewin secured several hard-earned second place finishes, setting a new class lap record of an impressive 1:46.962 .

Anderson and Lewin were two of several pro-level racers in attendance during the weekend. Attack Performance and Danny Eslick were on site with the Rider’s Discount Triumph Daytona 675R. When Eslick unexpectedly left the premises on Saturday, local legend Steve Rapp was happy to take his place. Rapp raced in numerous classes and ran as high as third, but always pulled off on the last lap out of respect for the regulars competing for championship points.

“I haven’t been on a bike in a while,” said Rapp. “I’m just happy to be out here. I’m actually supposed to race a 675R at Daytona next month, so it’s good to get some seat time on this bike.”

Racing resumes at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway the weekend of March 15th and 16th, as racers scramble for points as the Winter Series winds down. CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid positions in all, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from. Additionally, CVMA offers free reciprocity as a means of encouraging racers from other clubs to come out and compete.
