FIRST PERSON/OPINION
Via e-mail:
I, too, have had a near miss with a deer while racing in a Heavyweight Supersport race at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in So. Beloit, Illinois several years ago.
I had just come through turn one which is a fast right-hand turn and was running alone in the top 10 with the next group about 50 yards in front of me. The deer came running across the track at full speed just behind the group in front and just in front of me.
It was a nice-looking buck that had pretty big antlers and I am glad that no one else had incident with it. I reported it to the track officials after the race and everyone was alerted to it but it was not seen again that weekend.
There are also a lot of incidents with squirrels, etc. at Blackhawk Farms and I seem to recall a few turtles as well.
We all need to remember that most tracks are in the woods where the animals live and we need to keep our eyes open for foreign objects.
