Hurtado, Chasser Split Wins
Experts David Hurtado and Joe Chasser each won races last Sunday, May 7 at Arroyo Seco Raceway near Deming, New Mexico. For Chasser, this was a remarkable achievement since this third round of racing also marked just his third race day as an expert.
In the first race of the day, the Unlimited Superbike sponsored by Kurveygirl.com, Chasser and his Yamaha YZF-R1 led the race from green flag to the checkered. Mikey Shreve, also onboard an R1, made Chasser earn the victory, as he matched pace with Chasser throughout the entire race and passed the finish line only 0.257 of a second behind. Unable to find a hole and make a pass on Shreve, Hurtado and his Kawasaki ZX-10R had to settle for third; his skill at late braking was held in check by Shreve’s drive out of the corners.
Having qualified pole for the premier Formula Arroyo sponsored by Evan Steel Performance, it seemed that Chasser might snag the double. Shreve, gridded second, entered the Kink first, however, with Chasser and Jason Brown behind. Hurtado had one of his terrible starts for which he is notorious and entered the first corner last.
A red flag resulting from a crash during the first lap was a great opportunity for Hurtado to redeem himself at the restart, but once again he found himself at the tail of the pack. Shreve and Chasser nabbed the first two positions, and Joe Janiga and his ZX-6R the third. Josh Kauffman flexed his R1’s muscles on the back straight when he overtook Janiga, and Kauffman held onto the three spot until the fourth lap when Hurtado made the pass with better drive out of the Carousel.
Hurtado refused to settle for third this time around, and he overtook Chasser with late braking just before the Esses during the fifth lap. With six laps completed, Hurtado caught Shreve at the exit of Yucca and squeezed past him for the lead. The top three maintained their positions for the remainder of the race; Hurtado claimed the top step of the podium, Shreve and Chasser the second and third.
The fastest lap time of the race was Hurtado’s 1:08.080. Shreve put down a 1:09.011, Chasser a 1:09.425, and Kauffman a 1:09.815.
The fourth round of ASMA racing will continue Sunday, June 11.
Joe Chasser:
“(In the first race) I got the hole shot and rode pretty defensively from there. I was good on the brakes and on the gas. I had lost confidence with a low side yesterday (during practice), but I have a good feeling for the bike now, which led to the win, and I’ll take it. I’d like to improve every round–––it’s not what place I get, but just to become consistent this year and try to put down some eights.”
