Mike Shreve dominates ASMA/CCS weekend, riders support Roadracing World Action Fund Arroyo Seco Raceway June 11-12 By Andy Ruhl Local racer Mike Shreve dominated race day, winning every race he entered on his Yamaha R6. He was never seriously challenged for a win, but he was followed closely to the line by race organizer and track owner Roger Heemsbergen in the Formula Arroyo Unlimited Grand Prix race and also in Heavyweight Superbike. Shreve and Heemsbergen are former ASMA champions Shreve was in the 1:10 second range for most of the day, about as fast as a 600 has ever been around Arroyo Seco, with Roger Heemsbergen only a few tenths slower on his ’99 R6. Heemsbergen normally does not race in the series since he is the race organizer for the series. But this time he found enough help to allow entry to a few races. Even with limited practice time, Heemsbergen was able to win Unlimited Supersport. Former champion Heemsbergen comments: “It has been a while since I have been able to race, and being the organizer starts to feel like a job after a while. I needed to get back on the bike and have fun so this all can continue to be fun for me and everyone else. I also didn’t want to lose touch with what it’s like to be a racer, because I want this series to be about people having fun with racing, not just to be job for me. I didn’t have quite enough to hang with Mike [Shreve] today, unfortunately. I hadn’t won a race in 3 years, though. I haven’t had much time to race in the last few years.” Mike Shreve comments: “When I started racing out here, Roger [Heemsbergen] was like my idol, and it’s truly an honor to race on the same track with him.” Dean Harris took his first expert win in Unlmited Superbike on his lightly modified Kawasaki ZX-10R. He was followed closely by Tom Savoca of Ball Sac Racing, who had won the Formula 40 race earlier in the day. A majority of riders agreed before the races to accept ribbons during the awards ceremony in place of the normal trophies. The money saved by doing this will allow a donation of $925 to be made by ASMA to the Roadracing World Action Fund in the name of Vincent Haskovec. A number of riders donated their cash purses to the fund. Other donations were collected during the awards ceremony as well. The Arroyo Seco Motorcycle Association (ASMA) is dedicated to rider safety and hopes Vincent can make a full recovery as soon as possible.
