Comienza el campeonato AMA Pro de Supersport GUSTAVO LAYA JR ARRANCA ESTE JUEVES EN DAYTONA El motociclista venezolano Gustavo Laya tomará la salida este jueves en la primera válida del campeonato norteamericano AMA Pro en la clase 600cc Supersport, carrera que se efectuará en el circuito de Daytona, en Florida, jornada que contará con la participación de más de medio centenar de pilotos. El caraqueño Laya, de 21 años de edad, forma parte del equipo Moto Uno Racing, con sede en Miami, Florida, y junto a su compañero de escudería, el experimentado norteamericano Taylor Knapp, buscarán ubicarse entre los quince primeros a los mandos de sendas Kawasaki ZX-6 que cuentan con el soporte de los neumáticos Pirelli. Las prácticas y clasificaciones se desarrollaron el miércoles y el jueves la carrera arrancará a las 5 de la tarde sobre una distancia de 22 vueltas, equivalentes a 100 kilómetros. El pasado domingo Gustavo Laya Jr. vio acción en el mismo óvalo de Florida al tomar parte en los 500 Kilómetros de Daytona, primera ronda de la serie Moto-ST de resistencia o larga duración, prueba en la que estuvo al manubrio de una Ducati 749cc, junto a sus compatriotas Marco Martínez y Rodolfo Ramírez. El trío de venezolanos resultó la sensación de la prueba, aunque debieron abandonar en la vuelta 63 de las 106 que constaba la carrera cuando comandaban en su categoría y se ubicaban en el segundo lugar en la general entre cuarenta máquinas. “Me encuentro muy concentrado y preparado para el comienzo del AMA Supersport – comentó Laya – sé que tengo una oportunidad muy buena que no debo desaprovechar, aunque no será nada sencillo estar metido entre los mejores doce por la cantidad de equipos y pilotos oficiales. El domingo pasado tuvimos mala suerte en la carrera de resistencia junto a Marco (Martínez) y Rodolfo (Ramírez), porque se rompió el carter de la Ducati cuando estábamos peleando la punta en la general, y eso que llevábamos una moto de la categoría menor ST, aunque nos inscribimos en SST. Pese a que tuvimos que abandonar igual quedamos muy contentos por el gran desempeño que tuvimos”. Para Gustavo Laya se tratará de su primera temporada completa en el certamen AMA Pro, si bien en la edición 2006 tomó parte en cuatro fechas en la segunda parte del calendario. De momento, Laya será también el único venezolano presente en la serie de motovelocidad más prestigiosa de los Estados Unidos, una vez que Fernando Amantini no consiguiese reunir el presupuesto para competir en Superstock. Tampoco verán acción Armando Ferrer Jr y Víctor Chirinos, quienes lo hicieron en las campañas 2005 y 2006. Gustavo Laya debutó en Venezuela en la Copa Fucam de 150cc en 1999 adjudicándose el mayor número de victorias y desde hace 3 años vive en la ciudad de Miami. En la temporada 2005 se consagró campeón de Florida en la serie CCS Amateur donde obtuvo cerca de 50 victorias y 8 coronas. Su padre es Gustavo “Vampiro” Laya, piloto que destacó en los años setenta en el motociclismo nacional y además es especialista en la preparación de motores de competencia. El joven centauro caraqueño cuenta también con la asistencia del doble campeón mundial de motociclismo, Carlos Alberto Lavado Jones. La apertura del campeonato AMA Pro de velocidad de los Estados Unidos forma parte del programa de las clásicas 200 Millas de Daytona, carrera que se disputará el sábado con motos de la clase F.Xtreme sobre una distancia de 68 vueltas al trazado de 4800 metros de longitud. NCR and factory rider Valter Bartolini conquered Daytona. The rider from Imola, dominated the supreme class of the Sound Of Thunder on the NCR Millona One Shot. Bartolini narrowingly missed the victory earlier in the day by a few inches in the Battle Of The Twins race. Valter got a little unlucky passing some lapped riders and just finished short to Moto Guzzi’s Guareschi and lapped the circuit in 1:46 (BOTT lap record). NCR’s Bartolini was able to improve on his lap time to 1:45.4 which was 2 seconds faster than he was able to do the day before. Not bad for a first showing at Daytona. The results show the great power and agility of the NCR Millona One Shot. By the way, Valter had to start from the back of the starting grid! Valter Bartolini showed that once he started familiarizing himself with the track, he was able to start chipping away at executing phenomenal inside and outside turn passes. The NCR Millona allows exceptional deep braking and mid corner corrections which come in handy at Daytona. So after two days at Daytona, NCR was able to collect a win, two seconds and two thirds including a third by Ducati Factory rider Larry Pegram. More, from a press release issued by Nadine Lajoie: 3rd place at Daytona That was the first experience at Daytona International Speedway for Nadine Lajoie, a Canadian female racer. High above her expectations, she finished on the podium with a 3rd place in Middleweight Superbike, a grid filled by 37 amateur racers who come from different regions in the States. “When I saw the rain on the morning and my lap times in these conditions, I knew that a podium would be possible for me”, she claimed. During Thursday practices, her lap times were very good considering her first time at Daytona and the level of the racers there. Originally, she was expecting a top 20 position, but finally, she built a very good pace and confidence and she finished 9th in the GTU race on Friday afternoon. The last race was held Sunday morning but she was entered in the Unlimited Superbike race with her 2005 Honda CBR 600RR principally sponsored by Xtra-Sharp, Importations Thibault and Honda Canada. She started 19th out of 22 racers and passed 7 racers in a 5 laps race to finish 12th, the first 600cc in the results against 750cc and 1000cc bikes. At the checkered flag, she battled again to pass 2 other big bikes but she could not keep up with them on the fast banking! She was really excited about her experience at Daytona: “I cannot believe that I did Daytona race week-end, one of my dreams, and with a podium, it gives me the confidence to continue to work hard and find new sponsors. Here in Canada, we have less than 6 months of track time and I wish to live in California or Florida and race all year long!
