Riding once again for the Ducati Xerox Junior Team in the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup on the Ducati 1098R the youngster dominated the weekend’s proceedings. Setting the fastest time in all but one session, he qualified in pole position, his first since 2006, setting the fastest lap during the race and confidently taking the race win. Roberts who was fighting a serious wrist injury throughout 2007 showed his true form today and demonstrated why he was British Superstock Champion in 2006. He was unable to show his true colours last season but after training hard through the winter and also allowing more time for his wrist to heal he was eager to get back out racing again. Having tested the Ducati 1098R only a few times prior to the first race it was the ideal start for Roberts and one he hopes to carry through the remainder of the season. In glorious sunshine at Valencia, Spain he gained a fantastic start and lead the race for the entire 13-laps. He was being put under pressure by Italian Davide Giugliano on the Suzuki who was keen to try and make a move on the Australian and go for the lead early in the race. Roberts, however, had other ideas and rode a smooth and very confident race bridging a gap of nearly four seconds by the time the chequered flag came out. Commenting a delighted Roberts said “It’s such a nice feeling to be back on the top step of the podium again. This is my first win in the dry in the European Superstocks since 2006, after my injury last year I found it difficult at the majority of the races to fully push to my limits as I was still in a lot of pain. I’m so pleased for the team that I have been able to do this and that they had the faith in me to keep me on the Ducati again this season. They have all worked incredibly hard, all last year and this weekend and this is my thanks to them and I hope that it will continue through the season. I’m on such a high and really pleased that it’s started this way, I hope that I’ll be able to do the same again at the other races but I’m just taking one step at a time. Corti 11 More, from a press release issued by Pirelli: 1000cc Superstock The first race of the season for the STK1000 class and it was a race with an incredible pace. In the first part of the race the leading guys were constantly under the old Roccoli record time. The fastest race lap was set by Brendan Roberts, the race winner, who made an amazing 1’36.681 a time that would have allowed him to race in the SBK class. Roberts really dominated the race on his Ducati and the battle was only behind him, between Giugliano, Simeon, Polita and Corti. Pirelli DIABLO SUPERCORSA SC2 tyres offered the riders high levels of performance, not only because of the fast laps, but most of all allowing to them to express their real potential on the Pirelli tyres on all kinds of bikes. They do not need a special race setup to perform well. 600cc Superstock The first race of the season for the Superstock 600 riders was competitive and exciting. The young riders in this increasingly competitive class have helped us to a great show and sometimes made small mistakes due to inexperience. Petrucci made a fantastic lap and new track record with the time of 1’39.549. The race itself was taken by the remarkable Loris Baz, the youngest ever race winner in this class, who turned 15 on the first of February this year. A new record was set by the Pirelli DIABLO SUPERCORSA SC2 and most of all another great race in which riders could really express their potential, thanks to being able to find set up easily on Pirelli tyres, and get good feedback. More, from a press release issued by YZF Yamaha Junior Team: Superstock 600 European Championship Victory for Loris Baz! For his first ever race in the Superstock 600 European Championship, the young Loris Baz (15) achieved a magnificent goal when he won the event. Loris took the lead early, and then managed the first laps with Petrucci, Black and Arcas. Greg Blag then led the race, but unfortunately he crashed and his bike caught fire on the track. There was a red flag. Then the riders started for the last five laps. Loris Baz did a beautiful job and was the leader of these last five laps. He is now leading the championship. Loris Baz: « I am very happy. The race went really well. The fight was superb. It was an excellent weekend for me because my main opponents do not score a lot of points. My team did a great job. I had an excellent bike. Thank you to everybody.”
