Australian Superbike Champion Josh Waters’ five-day stay at Antelope Valley Hospital, in Lancaster, California, ended when he was discharged Sunday evening, but his plan to race in next weekend’s AMA Pro Road Racing event at Mid-Ohio is not likely to happen, according to a team official. Waters was testing a Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000 AMA Superbike July 7 at Willow Springs International Raceway in preparation for riding in place of injured Blake Young at the next two AMA rounds, at Mid-Ohio and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, but the 23-year-old Australian ran off the track at high speed and crashed, suffered a collapsed lung and “severe” concussion and was airlifted to the hospital. “With the lung, they’ve told him not to fly for two weeks,” said Peter Doyle, who is the Crew Chief for Young and also the Team Manager for Rockstar Makita Suzuki. “So that’s an issue for Mid-Ohio, because he’s got to get there somehow. The other point is whether the concussion has healed enough for this weekend. “As you know, footballers and most people who get heavily concussed they have to take a week off. I just don’t see Mid-Ohio being a good opportunity. He definitely won’t be in any sort of physical condition, I believe, to go and do two races at a track he’s never seen before. So I think if he wants to ride it will be better off for everyone’s sake to wait for Laguna Seca. “He’s a lot better but you can tell he’s still obviously concussed. He’s vague and forgets conversations 10 minutes later. But other than that, he’s up and walking around. He’s not doing any exercising yet, but he’s up and walking around. He’s starting to eat. He’s recovering quickly.” Doyle said meetings will be held Tuesday afternoon, after Waters’ Manager/Crew Chief Phil Tainton arrives from Australia, and then a decision will be made at that time or early Wednesday morning regarding Mid-Ohio. In the event Waters does not go to Ohio, Doyle said no one will ride in his place. As far as Young is concerned, Doyle said he received a positive report on his fractured vertebra at a doctor’s appointment last week, and he is still on-schedule to return to action at VIRginia International Raceway. Young suffered a fractured L1 vertebra when he crashed June 9 while testing at Barber Motorsports Park.
