Maxwell Lodges Fastest Ever ASBK Lap Around Phillip Island

October 13, 2018

Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1) has produced the fastest domestic championship lap at the Spokes.com.au presents Round 7 Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. The ‘Island’ specialist was majestic on his Yamaha machine and will be a huge contender in claiming overall victory tomorrow in the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK).

As reward for his pole position, Maxwell was presented with the Elite Roads Superbike Pole Position Award and cheque. The lap was certainly one for the ages and had the crowd applauding with his 1:32.096. This marks his 20th pole position in ASBK.

Maxwell commenting; “I actually thought that lap was a little untidy and I didn’t know what to expect, I came out of the last turn, looked at the timer and was very surprised. Massive thanks to the boys and we’ve been refining the package to make it better and better. We’ll go back and have a look at the data ahead of tomorrow. Big thanks also to the boys at Elite Roads for the cheque and I’m happy to take it off them for once!”

Josh Waters (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSX-R1000R) has secured second on the grid for tomorrow’s racing. He actually had a crash late in Qualifying Two, after he got incredibly close to pipping Maxwell for pole. Waters definitely was not a happy camper after the crash, but he will be a huge contender in tomorrow’s races.

Bryan Staring (Kawasaki BCperformance, ZX-10R) has put his green machine back on the front row. Phillip island has been very kind to Staring in the past and he put together his best performance of the season back at Round 1 WorldSBK. He also was very confident his race pace could last the distance.

Three Time WorldSBK Champion, Troy Bayliss (Desmosport Ducati, Final Edition) managed the fourth fastest time this afternoon. The 2018 YMI Superbike Champion, Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing, Honda CBR1000SP1) managed fifth and will have some overtaking to do tomorrow to contend for more victories tomorrow.

It’s all set up for a cracker of a final round at Phillip Island. None of these riders are going to back down and they will be desperate to take the last two victories of the 2018 season!

Don’t forget we are going live tomorrow on SBS and Fox Sports at 1:00pm local time and live stream on www.ASBK.com.au
